Wondering if anyone has any experience with this or the 8 in model. I like the kukri design, and I'm thinking about this model. It will be used in bushcraft/canoing, etc. I realize the blade is not stainless, which is the way I prefer. This will be a work blade, not a wall hanger.

Thanks in advance

Not possible to know who the maker is. Only says used to work for Gurkha Kukri House.

The few who have purchased one like it. What do we know about their experience?

Maybe someone will come along. Best of luck.

I bought that exact model about 5 years ago. It is basically a Service No. 1 but with an extended tang. It has a horrible weight, balance and feel with a lot of handle vibration. Go with the Jungle Model if you plan to use it or the Service No. 1 if you want more of a show piece.

Anything shorter than the Service No. 1 (11" overall) is just a curved knife and really just a novelty. It will not feel behave or perform like a kukri.

My recommendation would be the Jungle model. Keep a small can of Rem Oil with you so if you get it wet canoeing you can give it a quick rub down and it will last forever. My Jungle was my first kukri and still one of my favorites.

Dobe you need to check out Himalayan Imports for better blades....highly recommended by many people here and they are part of the forums!!

sorry but I'm going to have to disagree I used Himalayan imports to buy my kukri knife years ago and got burned by them very poor customer service and sub-par merchandise.

yes I know they have their dedicated fan boys here but, first impressions are always the most important.

If you just like the look of the knife buy it, I guess.

I've owned a kuk made in Nepal since the '60's. In short, it's wonderful. If you're wanting a good kukri you should take a little research time and visit a few sites. Kukri has become a big word lately and its becoming easier to buy one that looks so impressive in a pic but turns turkey when you use it. Also, some makers are venturing further and further from the traditional design.

If you're wanting non-Nepal I see a lot about the Cold Steel models. Probably a few others are good but it's really only going to be a FEW others. I think Ka-Bar produces a quasi-kukri now that I have seen a few talk about.

I would go with one of the major distributors of Nepalese kuk's if you can. If you decide you don't want to you're going to get a lot of good suggestions here from knowledgeable people. Wait and study the market and research khukuris if you have the time. It won't take long and will be worth it.

good advise. I have a Cold Steel. It.s nice. I want another, and I have no problem doing research.

Just from the research today, I've noticed that Himalayan Imports is much higher than others. Is the quality that much better. I don't mind paying for quality, but I want to make sure that there is a difference.

Really? I have a few kuks from HI and have never had anything but outstanding customer service from them. I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy as i have seen and spoken to some of their fanboys. Their product seems to be A++ and the one time i had an issue where i was shipped a different length kuk than the one i ordered they took care of it right away by sending out the right one the same day i told them about the mistake.

be sure to find out the shipping charges before you buy. HI is less on the shipping, and the total cost for their khukuri is less.

Indeed. The only time I've seen that Bill or Yangdu not be able to resolve a customer complaint to the customers satisfaction is when the customer has been hostile or otherwise unreasonable (rare, but it happens). I've personally seen Yangdu bend over backwards to make things right, especially if it was her error. I've also seen her take care of matters when they weren't necessarily warranted.

Do you order directly from HI, or from a dealer for the best price?

There are no Himalayan Imports "Dealers". Direct from HI is the only way, either by ordering from the website or from a DOTD (deal of the day) thread on the forum here on this site. Unless, of course you count secondary market items from auction sites or from the BF Exchange.

I have several HI kukri and my most used traditional kukri is an HI Bonecutter. It is a working piece of art and. I wouldn't trade it for any 10 other kukri. You can get an HI BSI (same as a BAS, Service No 1 or Jungle) and you will be very happy.

Are you sure they were in business then? This is "EX Gurkha Khuukri House." Elimnate the "EX" and it sounds like a company that has some history.

Given your entire four posts here and the tremendous reputation of HI, especially for service, please understand that your input will be given little weight.

Thomas,

The Khukuri Houses are really just an extended web of internet stores and it can easily be seen that all offer the same models. Even when one site doesn't offer a model they can get it for you because they are mostly being made in the same place.

So in this case, it is exactly the same kukri regardless of what company or website claims to be making it. The point of the comment I made was that the extended tang throws off the balance of the kukri. The weight distribution back into the handle not only throws off the balance is also caused lots of handle vibration. And users of the kukri know that correct balance is important for the blade to perform like a kukri. Also the handle slabs are the most uncomfortable I have ever handled. I have seen and handled many of the newer freakish models they are selling now and what they mostly are, are modifications made to the standard Service No. 1 blade which takes something good and functional and turns it into a trinket.

Absolutely false.
Just because a business happens to have "house" in it's name does not necessarily mean they are made in the same shop.
KH and it's sister companies and EGKH are separate and distinct entities
A Bishwakarma who has left the employ of one business may be hired by another and produce similar or like models for the other company, as many of the styles of khukuri are regional or military patterns that everyone produces. Add to it that some companies also buy stock from aruns that have no internet business or advertising. And then again, sometimes these companies have no problem producing anothers proprietary designs. This accounts for similarities in the stock you will see available.

I do see five stars on that knife page....and, what, 23-25 responders? Didn't read them though.

It's not that bad looking of a knife from here. Not sure how snobby I want to be here....

I still say, OP if you want the knife, buy it.
