Laminated Bowie WIP - Photo Heavy!

Photo's back. Don't know why that happened.

I've been out of town this week, teaching a class at the New England School of Metalwork in Maine. I'll be posting some info about the school and the class when I get home, but I just checked in and I appreciate all the kind remarks about the photos and the finished knife.
 
Very generous of you Burt in laying out your entire laminating process and we are the more educated as a result. Just another example of the giving and sharing which takes place on a regular basics in the customs community.

Very nice Bowie. I especially like the bold blade profile and the inset damsacus take-down screw is sooooo coooool. :cool:

Another thanks for showing us the process Burt. Interesting and a fine bowie at the end. It dont get much better than this.
 
Thanks a lot Burt. Beautiful knife and an excellent reference WIP for those of us who hope to be able to try this technique some day. And I love the disappearing hammer shot :)

Quick question though, did you have to etch that blade or does the forge simply show after a high polish?
 
Good question..... Yes, the blade is etched in ferric chloride. When finished, there's no visible line at all. It just looks like a carbon steel blade. The blade can be blued as well to show the line, but it makes the line look different. The ferric reacts with the steel in a certain way that really reveals the fine details the best (so far...)

If the knife is a user, the blade will darken with age, but the ferric just gives it a head start.

Also, how great is it that all the photos are still there? Most posts this old just have broken links.

I really hate you Salem.....at a profound, visceral level.;)

This was a fairly nice Foster bowie....the aesthetics seem to keep shifting one way or the other.

A timely resurrection of this thread, I have a billet I got from Mr. Burke at the Blade Show and one recently from Mr. Bruno that I have some plans for. Excellent info!

Actually, Salem, its a great idea to sticky this permanently. I saved the thread on my browser as i do with all good WIP threads for future guides on knife-making. I hope that in 20 years its still around. Maybe I should save every picture and make a manual.
