Lanyards!!

As has already been said, on a smaller knife they give an extra bit of grip and stability.

If there's no hole I use a convenient stand-off.
As for what to use for beads, most of my collection are inexpensive Chinese brands and ~I don't see the point of using a bead that costs more than the knife it's on. Cheapskate that's me.
I found a place doing A4 and A2 stainless steel nuts, half nuts, washers, for beads and bow shackles, D shackles, twisted shackles, for bracelets. not cheap but a lot cheaper than "branded" beads. Clean and shiny enough to use straight from the packets. If you are in the U.K. try Graphskill.

Cheap and simple - just like me. ;)

I wrapped a strand of the paracord string around the ends to bulk it up, so the bead was snug on it. I slipped the bead down, then dropped superglue into the bead to hold it secure. Thus way, no big knot on the end to hold the beads in place. Very strong too.

How did u do this

There are endless videos on youtube about different parracord lanyards. Find one you like and do a search on it. I think this link helped me with the box knot: http://www.lighthound.com/Square-Weave-Paracord-Lanyard_ep_40-1.html . You can experiment with different colors by fusing the paracord together. The one on the end has four colors to match the custom scale of my 550. Be careful though. Like knife buying, paracord and it's various projects can get addicting. I don't really even like lanyards that much.....

Addiction might be a strong word, but yeah it is very easy to get carried away out of the gate. I have about 1,000 feet of various cord colors in bags at home.

On the bright side, it is useful.

Did first lanyard today - just a quick snake knot lanyard. It was pretty simple with all the vids out there.

Those are cool, but just an FYI that in some states a monkey's fist with a metal ball or any other metal weight on a cord or spring is classified as a "slung shot" and is illegal in the same category as a blackjack or sap.

This might be a dumb question, but are lanyards functional beyond having some extra paracord if you need it?

What other's have said for grip and security. I have a square braid on my esee4 which on a couple occasions saved me from dropping it. It slipped a bit from my hand but instead of running out of something to hold onto my hand slid to the lanyard and I was able to grip it nicely.

I also have a hangman's noose on my kershaw leek, the noose end grips a carabiner which I put on my belt loop. The paracord burned real nicely into a ball end that stops the cord from slipping off the lanyard hole in the knife. By doing it this way, instead of a loop and knot, the cord comes out of the handle dead center and doesn't droop to one side.

Finished this lanyard for my benchmade 162. I have a custom kydex sheath on the way as well. This will be going on my battle belt. This lanyard uses a celtic button knot to adjust the tension when wearing it around your wrist. The loop is large enough to wrap and hold the knife securely to your hand.

I just redid the lanyard on my Leek; I liked how the whole thing felt clipped to my belt loop but the length of the lanyard made it a bit awkward to use the knife at times. So I shortened it up and found out without the length it sits a little awkward in the pockets so I did away with the carabiner completely and went with a little glow fob.
I think it looks much more pleasing than before. I've also found some tritium lights online that could have lots of possibilities for embellishing.

What is that

This is acid etching (and stone washing). Etched the blade and stone washed it with some RTA on the blade that was cut like my logo. Once finished, I removed the RTA and the logo came out as shown in the pic. You can also do some custom G10 scales to make it unique. These are just plain orange G10 slabs, custom fit to the knife and patterned with a dremel tool.

Here's a pic of the lanyard I put on the same knife.

How do you stone wash and do all that stuff

Search a bit for yourself before you ask questions. That way you can have better questions for BF members to answer rather than a constant "how do you do that?" or "what is that?"

bigmack127 has it right. There is tons of info already here on BF from guys that are much better at this than I am. You just have to go look for it but it's easy to find most times. If you have questions, PM me or email me and I'll be glad to help you on acid washing and stone washing without rehashing info that's already posted. You can find everything you need at local stores and do it at home for very little cost and a little bit of labor. It is one more way to make YOUR blades unique, along with your lanyard styles.
