Large Fixed Blade?

An MBC fixed blade?

What I would like to see wouldn't be just one but a series of three made up of two fixed and a folding version.

I know this is really gonna' catch a lot of crap from people but I would like to see a collaboration to revive the old REKAT Hobbit Warrior in four and six inch blade versions and the Folding Hobbit. I have one of the Hobbit Warriors with this drab green coating and had one of the folding Hobbits. I sold off the folder when it developed a HUGE amount of vertical blade play.

That design seemed to be able to do it all in either forward or reverse grip. I just received my Chinook 3 the other day and the idea of matching that with a Spyderco Folding Hobbit just sends my salivary glands into overdrive.

Sal; How about a collaboration with Ethan Becker on a Spyderco Camp Knife?

Now THAT is interesting. It would be incredible to see Spyderco making some Becker designs, such as the 5 inch Campanion, or BK-7 (fullfilling the tactical guys wishes) and or the BK-9 for the big chopper guys. I know that there is a market for these tools and a vaccum was created for Beckers when Camillus went down.

OK. I just saw the Hossom thread. Looks like you guys are all over this already.

Hi Tonie,

We actually do have a similar design in the works. It is based on the Bob Taylor Warrior design and was requested by a particular customer. It has many changes, but the heritage is obvious. It is on hold while the customer tests materials before moving forward. We would also need to make an arrangement with Bob before we begin prototyping.

Sal I love the fact that you ask for customer opinions. I figure I would add mine as well:

I would not buy it.

I have no use for a large fixed blade like that. I suppose I could use it camping for light chopping of firewood but my $20 hatchet does that much better and I don't worry about ruining it.

I am 100% Spyderco these days, I don't see myself buying any other knife. However, this one just wouldn't be in my lineup.

Thanks for everything you do, I look forward to the new designs coming out!

As an ELU large (5"+) blades are the area I'm least interested in so I'm unlikely to buy a new one (quite happy with my RAT7 fr the times I need a blade this large). However if I did want a larger knife it wouldn't be for MBC, more of a larger camp knife that can serve in the kitchen - a larger temperance with a lower slung blade, for use with chopping boards, in effect.

Hope this helps.

Hey Ming,

Funny you should mention the RAT7. I love my RAT, and use it for all sorts of camp/woods/kitchen chores. I've chopped through 4" trees with it, peeled bark, cut blackberries, opened packages, and whittled with it. Strangely, it's the kitchen where I use it the most. It works great for chopping carrots/cucumbers, slicing pears and apples, and is a really good size and weight.

Sal, if I were to ask for anything, it would be a similar knife to my RAT7, but in stainless steel. Even though the D2 is about 12% chromium, I found rust on the edge one day after using it in the kitchen, even though I dried it off. I love using my Native, and now my Manix in the kitchen, because I never have to worry about getting my blades wet and possibly not drying them.

So a nice, simple 6-7" blade, straight enough to use for food prep but heavy enough to chop with, square spine for scraping sparks, a good grippy handle that can be used in different grips, and a good solid stainless steel would make a fabulous knife! I figure if other high-end knife manufacturers are using S30V for big blades, Spyderco could make a good camp knife in it too! Of course, the Hossom blades already seem to pretty much fit this description.....

I would use it camping, chopping wood, brush clearing, etc. I would love to see CPM 3V, 52100, or 5160. Full tang, micarta/g10 grips. Still like a finger choil. Sharp spine for fire steel.

What does MBC stand for?

My vote for the mbc niche goes for spydercos take on the fighting bowie design in 01, 1095, 5160 or 52100 steel with a linen micarta handle.

OK, I like it. A spydy version of the pattern 1. I;d like to see shaped g10 handles and the option of 2/3 of one edge to be spyder edged also a quality carry rig, maybe something in kydex and nylon similiar to the under arm carry originally intended. I think this would be an awesome project with appeal to mbc folks and military knife buffs and of course fairbairn buffs. 3v with a tapered tang encompassed by ovaled g10 scales. Then maybe a smatchet companion knife;-)>

--Just revisiting this thread to add my two cents. A Spyderco version of the Pattern 1 F/S Knife would be a real wet dream!

I'd be second in line--behind Ken Cox.

Ya know, I really thought I was going to take a lot of flak for that Hobbit request, at the very least I didn't expect anyone to take it seriously. Sal, whether that knife ever makes production or not, you have my life long gratitude and respect! Of course you already earned my life long admiration for the knives that you make. Thank you.

I had a fixed blade idea, except its for a small neck knife : a collaboration with the hideawayknife. A spyderco version of an hak would be cool, then pattern the blade after popular spyderco blade shapes. And maybe an option of vg-10, or H-1 for a corrosion resistant option. :)

In my opinion no company so far has produced a decent version of Applegate-Fairbairn. I have a custom one from W.Harsey and it is amazing. The most comfortable knife I ever held in my hand. A production model with micarta or G10 handle would be great. If authentic A-F is not a possibility, then maybe something similar to it.

The Applegate-Fairbairn is, IMO, a beautiful design. Many makers have done nice pieces, mostly custom. I spoke at length with Rex Applegate about the design. I was still in my early design days at the time, so the information was pecious to me. Well thought out for the intended purpose. Perhaps something to consider in the future.

I don't know how this escaped me, but several years ago I had a custom maker scale up my Military to a 5" fixed blade. Because it was a fixed blade he could shorten the handle to 4.5 inches as opposed to the Military's 5.5 inches, therefore the overall length of the knife was the same. His version had just a little less belly so it looks a sittle slimmer. I attached a pocket clip to the handle and rigged up a pocket sheath so that I could carry it clipped to my pocket the way I carried my Military; this made for one seriously quick deployment!

Unfortunately, the only handle material he had available was wood, so I wrapped the handle with racket grip.

This knife is just awesome (sorry,I don't have access to picture technology) in any grip but would absolutely rock with G10 or Carbon Fiber.

So for materials and construction, howzabout a VG10 Flat Ground blade, G10 handle (to keep it really flat) and for something really special, an optional pocket clip. The sheath could be a kydex multi-position or clips ala Cold Steel for waist band style carry. I picture it as a plain edge, but a combo blade with a small section of serrations might make it more appealing for those who need the rope or seat belt cutting functions.

Please, please consider. I would be the first to buy. Someone has to make decent production A-F knife. I was even considering buying an Al Mar version and changing the handle on it. Like the blade, but hate the wooden handle. I think Spyderco A-F would be a hit.

"I'm working on a larger Temperance with a different handle material than FRN, but it's not finished. I've got other projects ahead of it.

sal"

Another, bigger, Temperance" Ohhhh m-m-m-yyyy!!!!

My teacher had a Temperance for awhile and he thought it was a great knife. However, at the time I was really into the Bowie and just didn't have a place for it. I'm still kicking my own butt for not picking up on it. But now a larger version? Be still my beating heart!

One suggestion would be to extend the cooperation with Jerry Hossom to make a production model of either the Hunter-Killer, Millenium Fighter or Ranger.

Other suggestions would be the previously mentioned bowies by Patton Knives. The Merlin, Integral Foxbat or the Kasper Grande would all be really nice.

My personal dream collaboration would be with Shiva Ki to make the Spirit as a production model. The Mercinary would do as well...

I almost forgot to mention the ultimate Spyderco collaboration, Mad Dogs ATAK in stainless( I´m sorry Kevin...). Then I wouldn´t have to by another knife ever again.

Personally I wouldnt be all that interested in an extreme design fighting knife of that size, if I were to carry it into harms way it has to be able to serve as a utility blade as well. Something most of the above mentioned blades would do well.

When it comes to materials I would prefer stainless steel for the blade, VG-10, S30V, N690 depending on place of manufacture. For handles I´d prefer micarta, or possibly G-10 with some form of enhanced surface structure to it( like the ZT knives ).

A scalping knife with blade catch and a clip point capable of snap cuts. It should be light enough for fast movement and food prep and have a 52100 blade (You will get it eventually Sal) 7 inches long. G10 handles.
I am actually going to make a knife like this myself but without the blade catch and with wood or elk antler handles and 1095.

There actually was a folder based on the Hobbit or Warrior knife.
The emerson CQC8 banana knife. Emerson was just on the front page of wikipedia and it was an excellent article which mentioned that.
