In the lockback category my old school Herbertz 900 folder from the '80's would be a good candidate.
From top to bottom: Herbertz 900, Strider GB, Spyderco Military.

BTW; this quality knife is not your average display piece; it is very well made from good materials, has a nicely done hairshaving edge, and not even a hint of play in the lock.
Rumour has it that these knives were actually made in Japan, not in Germany.

Herbertz 900 dimensions:

Length open: 15,6 inch (39,5 cm)
Length closed: 8,8 inch (22,3 cm)
Blade length: 7,1 inch (18,0 cm)
Blade thickness: 0,2 inch (5,0 mm)
Weight: 697 grams

As an update, I just made a trade for a Cold Steel Rajah 2 to go with my 6" blade Ti-Lite. The Rajah 2 has a 6 inch blade, but opened, the total length of the knife is 14 inches! The Rajah 2 is a massive folder.

I think you will find that one interesting.

I bought it just because it was so big with the recurve blade...just to have it and have found it to be far more useful as a field blade than I ever anticipated.

I nearly sold it but now it's a user.

On the clip in a jeans pocket, it is amazingly well balanced. I hardly know it's there....almost to a fault as I really don't like forgetting I have that monster on me if I head out to the store or somewhere else in the open public.

The Darrel Ralph/ Camillus CUDA MAXX and MADD MAXX patterns were offered with 5.5", 7", and 9" blades. I still need the 9" model. It is 1/2 yd. long when opened.

i tried to google but found nothing on the 9". Please provide a link, thanks

Well, the Pohl Force Alpha One or Two could be also some kind of a big Folder. (german Knifemaker who is producing in series)

Kind regards

I have seen three or four different 9" blade Darrel Ralph folders at the Blade Show. Not all were for sale. I am not sure if they had the MADD MAXX designation because they were custom made by Darrel Ralph (not Camillus). All the blades that I saw were stiletto points. All of the handles that I saw were inlayed with Carbon fiber or white linen Micarta (or Ivory?). The handles were file worked. The knives had frogs instead of pocket clips because nobody had pockets deep enough to carry a clipped knife. The average price was around $1500. This is all based on my feeble recollections of things experienced in the past.

Greetings

big brute folders are alive and well brother. In my opinion the most notorious maker is cold steel. Their ultimate ridiculous creation is of course the "espada" xl. They have married a full 7" bowie style blade to a micarta-scaled handle designed with (3) grip points/applications. This beast does indeed qualify as a "folding short sword". They also have several other less intimidating designs that are slightly smaller. And yes, this monster is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

had you done your research (on line) before posting??????????? Hmmm......

Cheers, gypsyurbanwarrior [/i] [/i]
i've had a buck 317 trailblazer in my toolbox for 25 years and fortunately
because it looked so nice i hardly ever used it and instead used
a bunch of cheapo chinese knives to do a lot of nasty dirty work.
My nephew had seen it and mentioned he would like one like it
and i went online only to find that six or eight of the biggest knife
makers that i knew of dont make any folding knives that large anymore.
I just assumed i would have dozens to choose from.

Now what i'd like to know is does any quality brand name mfg make
folding knives as large as 5.25 inches or larger (closed)?
What happened to the concept of folding to make more compact
and safe ? If i had had an open knife in my tool box for 25 years
i would be all cut up when digging around for stuff.

Way back when i thought there were some folding knives bigger
than the one i bought. ? ? ?

DEFINITELY SOUNDS LIKE WE SHARE SIMILAR TASTES IN LARGE FOLDERS! I WOULD APPRECIATE YOURS (AND ANYONE ELSE'S) INPUT ON COLDSTEEL'S DISCON-TINUED "VAQUERO" SERIES. I'M LOOKING FOR A COPY OF THE VAQUERO GRANDE` (PREFERABLY NO SERRATION).

ALSO HEARD A RUMOR THAT A NEW VAQUERO SERIES IS BEING INTRODUCED. ANYBODY ELSE KNOW ANYTHING?????

i recently purchased one of the espada xl knives off ebay. i did this because while doing some research regarding Maryland state laws regarding the legality of knives, i discovered that any knife with a blade that folds into its handle (this excludes knives with a "button" on the handle that automatically opens knife) is considered a "penknife". and that Maryland legally defines a pen knife as "penknives today are commonly considered to encompass any knife with the blade folding into the handle, some very large". therefore, this "folding sword" is legally considered a penknife and can be carried, concealed or otherwise, in public. at least in maryland.

for some interesting reading check out this link. A man sued over false arrest for carrying a folding knife and won. http://pacer.ca4.uscourts.gov/opinion.pdf/011565.U.pdf

very interesting...
