Le Thiers Knife

Hi Smiling knife!
Of course it is OK to post this knife! It is also a very fine knife from the look of it...back strap is beautifully filed and of course the Juniper wood is awesome. Good photography mate!

Cheers
Leo

Here's one I bought a few years ago. It is one of the best made production knives I own.

I picked up a Le Thiers par Chambriard like this one about 8 years ago. I guess I didn't consider it a "traditional" knife, as the blade shape and slanted bolster made me think modern. The stag on mine is not nearly as exciting, though. It is one of my favorite slip-joints, and sees quite a bit of carry when I'm dressed up nice. Someone once posted a drawing of the shape of the back-spring and how it meets up with the blade, and its not flat like our USA-made designs, so offers much more retention force. I believe is was described as "cran-force" or something like that. I'll see if I can dig up the drawing.

Great looking knives guys. One day I'll spring for one. Threads like this just keep pushing me closer.:D

Yes , I couldn't explain it properly, but that's it, the top slips into a groove and you need a little force to close.

Too bad ( or good for my wallet) there's a limited number of dealers selling these in the US. Mine was imported all the way from Canada :)

A great post Daniel...thank you for the additional knowledge regarding these knives. It looks like there are a lot more of us Francophile knife lovers around here.
You know what I like about this forum...it has the greatest bunch of friendly members who rarely have axes to grind and who love their knives and their brands but don't criticize others for the knives/brands that they choose. Secondly, this forum has the best bunch of Moderators around...no sarcasm, no gratuitous put-downs or scathing criticisms of their fellow members. They are strong without brute force and fair, In fact you wouldn't know they were moderators if you didn't see the posted designation. This is why I stick to this forum and try to emulate these fine mods over at the forum where I am a Global Moderator. I can't say this about some other forums I have posted on, forums where I seldom go anymore.

Give in Gary! Come join us and we can cut baguettes, Camembert Cheeses and meats with our elegant knives and savor fine red wines. You won't regret it and above all your wife will love the knife too, even at the dining table! ;)

You got it in Canada. I am from Canada and just met one of the importers of French knives here. We have become good friends and I shall be buying my next Thiers knife from vendor reference removed in Quebec. From whom did you buy your knife in Canada? Maybe you remember?

Best
Leo

Hi Leo, Thanks for the kind remarks in your earlier post. I hope this doesn't cause you to change your mind. :o .

Please read the following for some rules on posting vendor links and referrals: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/754956-Vendor-Links-Referrals-amp-Endorsements

You folks can trade vendor info via email etc. We need to keep it off the forum though.

Thanks

I'm not sure if this is appropriate for the Traditional board, but South African knife maker Des Horn makes a custom Thiers folder.

Instead of the usual nail nick, the end of the tang is knurled, so the blade opens one-handed like flicking a lighter.

Oh my Buddha! What are you trying to do to my poor piggy bank! Such beauty! Such shipping costs!

We have good taste don't we Sam! Surely is a classy knife and I can't wait to add the next one to my collection! Does this mean we are gentlemen Sam?! LOL! After all they are classified as 'gentleman knives!

Cheers mate
Leo

Ha, ha, I'll have to buy a few more 'gentleman's' knives before i get called one!:)

Enjoying the thread and the pic's from others revived thanks to your enthusiasm Leo!

I see one of the Cdn distributors is in Magog, Que.

I've spent many a summer on the Lake there, just south of the border. My mother was from Newport, on the S end of the Lake. Magog is a wonderful city.

FWIW, there are some very nice cheeses made in NYState and Quebec, one at St. Benoit du Lac just outside Magog.

I have the compact in horn and armourette. There may be a juniper in my future.

Those are beautiful knives! I stumbled upon the French knives while on a vendor site. It'll take a bit of saving before I can buy one, but I eventually will...

I've been studying on these knives for the last couple of weeks, so this thread is gratifying to come across (people posting about these knives in English?! Lovely!). Chambriard appears to make the best of the best of Le Thiers style knives, but there are a dozen makers, and I'm looking at mid-price versions from Thiers knife makers that I know nothing about. Hopefully I won't get burned trying to save $50 or $60.

I have learned that Chambriard produces their Compagnon (the full-size slipjoint) with a carbon steel blade, and it can be purchased for the same price as the 12c27 stainless blade from some French online vendors.

I'm not sure how European price compare to U.S., but I think I paid about $100 US for the one above ( a few years ago).

They're hard to find in the US.

I have a couple of the compact size and bought a Compagnon recently. It is much larger.

They are both really nice knives and come with nice leather carriers.

If size is a concern, go for the compact.

I purchased from a U.S. distributor and the price and service were excellent.

Tom, you are right, Le Compagnon is MUCH bigger than the Compact. The latter is a pocket knife whereas the former is more of pack or belt knife.
