Quality control Thread where this thread developed from.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1141546-Ka-Bar-BK-16-Quality-Control-UPDATE

Decided to Move the BK16 discussion about how to mod them To a new thread.

All input is welcome. Pictures and Ideas are appreciated.

I will use this thread to post updates about the modification and progress of the Blades.

It will be a WIP thread that we can all take part in.

If you have comments concerning Ka-Bars quality control and customer service, please post in the above linked thread.

Thanks............. Now let the fun begin.

These are some of the ideas we came up in the previous thread. Seems we are going to make some kind of Wharnie or Sheepsfoot variation for sure.

Also a skinner of some sorts.

One of my renderings:

No problem. I never cared for the style myself. Then I won a Hornet from Todd in a contest. It's a cool little blade. You can place a lot of downward force on the end of the tip. Also, the blade shape allows the tip to get in hard to reach places. I actually like them, now that I have used one.

It never made sense to me anyway that the Lone Ranger had a sidekick. It offended my nine-year-old sensibilities.

Where were we? Oh yeah, wharnies...

Here's a rough mock up I did to see what we are talking about here. If I loose some belly by bringing the line up I can gain more length. ???

Then maybe some custom handle scales epoxied and pinned on and round off the back end off the handle to shorten it up?

I think the tanto is out. I would rather buy a bK15 and mod that since the 5 and 15 tantos look so good.

My favorite skinner was my dads old buck 103 he gave me when I was a kid. I used it for years and really love the style. That's why I like the Gamestalker so much cause they have a lot of the same designs features. I think I will make a BK16 skinner, a cross between the Buck 103 and the JAB Gamestalker. Put some sexy curves in it and some Jimping!!! haha
Then custom handle and round and shorten.

Man those pics of Wharnies are awesome.

And I usually eat my apple skins so I guess I really have no need for one. Just saying.

HaHa. Thumb grove anyone?? Might be cool right?

Speaking of sheepsfoot, here's a rendering I did of a modded 14. It was DerekH's idea. See what I mean about leaving a bit of a curve in the blade. This would work for the 16 as well:

Thanks Daiz.

Dex, you could always do this too. It's what you already have, I just left the original edge on it. Like so.

Personally, I wouldn't make the thumb divot that deep though. Also, this is pretty much what I was saying earlier, about leaving some of the curve on the edge.

I like the curve better too. It's sort of ESEE Laser Strike looking, with less belly. I would do it without the thumb divot first, it may look better without it. I was gonna render that too, haha, but didn't spend the extra time on it.

Sure thing. I can always add it later but once its there..... it's there for good.

And yea it could be LS looking. (Why oh why would they name it that, I expect that from TOPS, but ESEE?)

I think that looks pretty sweet. Maybe move the tip up just a slight bit, and probably not go with the thumb divot. I think that would be a sweet blade... It shall be named "The Lemonade" LOL!

You may be right.

And If this thing comes out decent, Im gonna etch that name on it!! :D

Here I found the thread I have been looking for. This is a B16 the was modded into a "bushcrafter" I'll try to post up a picture.

This is an idea, but yours is going to have a little bit more of a tip down profile I am assuming. I would also fix the finger guard choil area. Move it up or more in line with the edge of the knife.

Man, that did come out nice! So many decisions.

Lots of choices when you kinda look at the knife as a blank canvas... Was just looking at my spyderco manix and thinking about your knife... Maybe make the drop a little more gradual? Starting at the gimping then slowly making its way down to where you want the point... Dunno could be neat. You also could make it a LONG straight clip down to the belly.

Dex, can you post a full profile pic of the round-nose one? I'd like to do a virtual re-grind.

Sure. Like a trace out?

How about a trace-out on a piece of white paper with the blade itself below, in one picture?
(scales or not, not sure it matters as long as the knife sits flat to the camera without a shadow behind the blade profile)

I have never tried this before but... I did a long clip "mod" in paint on the flat bellied one... Kinda neat... I will have to mess with this more later...

ya beat me to it, but I'd use the other one.
trying to upload now.

dex-bk16-stubby-clip1.jpg

that would be, as they say around here, 'wicked'.
Note, I used the roundy to start, and dropped the tip about 1/8" when I drew that clip line.

HaHa. Not bad. This is kinda cool how everyone can add there ideas like this.
Y'all keep em' coming!!

And daizee, I'm gonna see if I can get my scanner working to get you some better pics. Don't know if I'll be able to get it done right since I'm teaching in a little while, But It will be done tonight for sure. And would it be better if I used a thicker marker or something for the outline?

I never bought this one, but I always liked it in a weird way.

You mean the weird way that you need six of every variation? ;)
