Lemons: BK-16 Mod Discussion and Ideas : Completed Photo's

I was just thinking a dark wood would really pop on there. Always glad to help, I can't wait to see how it turns out. Your last couple of endeavors turned out gorgeous!

I have a good amount of black walnut, some dark English walnut and beautiful desert ironwood. You're right, I'm pulling out some black walnut with full fiddleback figure and dark color. Thanks for reminding me.

Black walnut with the nickel/ silver end cap and some shiny brass pins is going to look sexy!

I've been watching the threads and enjoying the work all of you are doing while I heal. I ordered a BK16 because of this thread and will be modding it. So thanks fellas for helping me get back into knifework. Will post WIP pics when I start.

So cool man....... I always love your mods!!

Similar knife fifth from top.

Ah..... Very interesting indeed. This might work after all. Thanks for the pic.

I used Dex's slightly curved blade drawing with the stock handle to modify my new BK16. The blade now has a more graceful appearance. I drew the long straight swedge and the curve. By cutting the curve first I could change to straight if I did not like my first blade modification. The top of the spine was refinished with Brownell's Alumahyde. No other changes are planned. Thanks everyone for the inspiration.

Looks awesome hawkhead!!

Hi daizee, Thanks for looking and commenting. The grip cap would be held by means of a small threaded portion machined on the rear frame. The cap would be drilled and threaded so that it could be screwed on and then finish contoured to the oval handle. The pin holes are the screw holes which were left in their original locations for illustration purposes. My drill press will correct that.
The choil may indeed be a bit small. My drawing has the dimensions at 17mm in length and 5mm in height. Drawings are easily changed. This drawing was the only one without writing and notes to myself.

Oh this sounds to easy........lol Just machine some threads on that bad boy! Haha. Awesome stuff. I'd be interested so see the process when you do it.

This is my final drawing for my proposed BK16 mod coming in the next few months.

I can't wait to see this one completed hawkhead!! Looks bad ass and I know your work is always amazing so no doubt its gonna be a fantastic blade when done.

I am hoping to start some of the mods this weekend on these blades. Can't wait to get this project going!! :D

The second BK16 arrived along with a BK14. The mods I have planned for the 16 will have to wait until I heal a bit more. The 14, again thanks to Dex and others, will get the treatment along with pinned micarta scales. I will post another thread for the second 16 and 14 when I start. Right now drawing will have to suffice.
Dex- You are the 16 King and have set the bar pretty high. Thanks to you and all the Becker Men for your encouragement.

Alright, So I have some micarta, couple blocks of stabilized wood, bunch of G-10 liner material, and some corby and loveless bolts arriving tomorrow. I want to get one of these blades done as soon as possible. I have had some other projects going on here lately like my saber 16 mod that's finally finished, did some mods to my BK4, and the last couple of days, well I took about a half inch or more off of my BK-7 that I modded a while back. Let me tell you, to get the metal tapered and thinned out so you can put an edge on it was a lot of work. Especially since I don't have a belt sander. Did it mostly by hand with a flat piece of glass and sandpaper and used my diamond sharpening stone. (Well I don't know if it's called a stone?)

So That being said, I want to start with a knife mod that doesn't involve lot's of blade re-profiling. Handle and spine mods are fine. I did start grinding on one of the 16's already to see how much work it's going to take and figure out the best way to remove material so I'm gonna start with that one.

Lot's of work gonna go into each of these so I want to make sure it is a useable knife that I will actually have a need for. The Kitchen model with the the guard removed and the finger curve moved almost all the way up to the blade is an Idea I like a lot. Also been considering a bush crafter too. Hopefully I'll post some new progress and pics by the weekend.

And Hawkhead, I really can't wait to see your 16! Your 14 is turning out awesome, I'm working on one similar now.

Heres what I've done so far on the BK-16 Chef Model.

Still have a little more to do on the back end. Not sure if I'm gonna keep the Lanyard part or not. Might leave it, or maybe take it all the way back to where the whole is gone, or maybe even get crazy and make a bottle opener? Not sure.

This was the blade with the straight part. I did a mild re-profiling so it wasn't so straight. May leave as is or round a little more once the scales are on and she is stripped.

She is already feeling so good in the hand. I took some tan factory handles and ground them down to fit just so I could get a feel and it looked horrible however but felt amazing.

Gonna strip the blade for sure, But I am debating on etching the BK-16 logo only first?

Ok. That's all I have so I will update later when I have more.

Thanks and enjoy.

Dex, the B16 King does it again! Very interesting custom design and excellent work; you keep raising the bar each time you post.

Wow Dex that is looking real good... I like it because it will allow you to "thumb pinch" grip the blade giving you access to the full width of the edge on a surface, plus in a standard hammer type grip you can be closer to the edge giving more leverage, also material will slide up on to the cutting edge as opposed to getting snagged in a choil, etc etc etc!.. its all good!

May I just say, that wood you are using looks gorgeous! Those are going to be beautiful scales my friend.

Thanks guys. The more I handle it the more I like the feel of being able to choke up next to the blade. It's gonna be a fun knife to use when she's all done.

Let me tell you, that stabilized wood is something else. I have used many different woods like maple, ebony, rosewoods, oak, etc and nothing is as tough to work as this stuff.
Been sanding the back of the cut scales for like an hour. Almost done with the second one. My poor little band saw almost couldn't get the job done. haha.
I also cut some black and white g10 liners. Thinking black against the blade then the white against the wood?

Also incase anyone is wondering, I am going to put those two screws centered in the handle, not in the original screw holes. Already cut and shaped some thick g10 to fill the cutouts to put the screws thru. I am going to use the original holes with just a short brass pin thru them that just goes into the scales enough to hold them, not all the way thru so they won't be seen.

It is a stabilized piece of spalted Buckeye Burl. Not sure if it's from California or not but you are probably right.

I think the black against blade then the white would look the best. The black and white should contrast more between the metal and the wood that way.
Looking forward to seeing how this one comes out though.
