Let’s talk hunting knives. (Traditional)

I'm a flintlock hunter and appreciate all things 18th century, particularly anything leaning towards the French side. This is a replica french boucheron based off an excavated original from the french Fort Carillon (later fort Ticonderoga).

Nice red deer! There are a few ranches that have red deer to hunt in the US, but they are rare. I don't know anyone who has hunted them.

I just had to keep this thread from going into utter hibernation; these Remingtons will never see work in the field again but they were a force back in the day. Most of those old Remingtons had left hand sheaths. The right side was reserved for a handgun in a holster.

They'd see use (and love) if they were mine. That top one is wow, but all of them are amazing.

Thank you mate, he’s far from my biggest deer but he is the best with my flintlock.

We don’t have any native deer but had quite a few released, 6 of which established. Sambar are most common but where I live it’s reds. I do love them, roaring up a stag on foot is quite a thrill!

I hunt...knives (and most anything sharp). I spent 40+ years cutting up animals, but, as a veterinarian, I almost always had to sew them back together and send them home. While tromping around the woods searching for Bambi just doesn't really appeal to me, I'm glad others enjoy doing so. Less deer for me to "hunt" with my truck bumper!
If I did ever take up hunting, the challenge would be figuring out which folding hunter to pack along with me. Here are a few from which I could choose:

Eight factory-made and a one-off:

Decisions, decisions! T-A

Wow, thanks for sharing the-accumulator the-accumulator . Thanks for sewing up critters, we have a few pooches and a cat that we consider family. When I first read your post, I read vegetarian not veterinarian... LOL.

I'm not a huge hunter, I enjoy the hunt more than the kill. I do find a knife to be quite useful to have in the woods, even outside of butchering.

Man, love that knife, too bad Case quit making that model. My own favorite is a Grohmann No1, the Canadian belt knife. The design is second to none IMO, when I first got it my other knives quickly started to feel like crude sticks. The Grohmann is a meat-making wand, been using it for at least 15 years now and probably wouldnt be happy with anything else at this point. While nothing crazy, the steel is noticeably better than Buck 420HC. The Grohmann will quarter and de-meat a moose, needing only minimal attention afterwards to get it shaving sharp again. Any of my Bucks neededed a few touchups to get through a moose. The Farmer usually comes too.

Nice Moose 🫎!! 👍
John 😁

Always wanted to pick up a Grohmann, as I have owned two of the Herter's Grohmann knockoffs made in the 1960s, but I don't know by who. Ah...I have too many knives already.

Great stuff mate, you’re living my dream! Moose is a bucket list hunt for me, but it’s got out of control for non residents. I work for a Canadian company so hoping one day that leads to something.

Good looking work knife there too mate 👍🏼

Yeah, moose are my favorite. Elk and mule deer dont like to stray too far from development/ clearings, so you always end up with competition. IMO hunting big timber whitetail in rugged country is as quality of an experience as you can ever find, but the memories tend to get blurry over the years... every time I draw a moose tag I know I'm about to make a major life-memory.

I used to hunt them mostly by using a canoe to get into remote stretches of river, as early season tags got harder to draw I've started snow tracking them in the late season. Both methods are great, I actually prefer tracking them to calling, but you are highly dependent on getting good conditions in the late season. This year we had extremely crunchy snow by the 3rd of November and conditions just deteriorated all month, it would have been my 10th moose but instead ended up being the first moose tag I've failed to fill. Still, I spent 21 days in the bush this November, and I learned a ton watching a months' worth of deer tracks accumulate in that god-awful snow.

I've known this young lady since she was in the 6th grade! All through school she played basketball with my daughter. When she was growing up I called her, Lil Dani the Huntress. Not much has changed cept she moved to Idaho a few years ago and got married. I made the knife for her husband. Oh did I mention she's an award winning videographer and photographer specializing in what else? Hunting. Her pics:

I had to look at that one for a while to figure It out on my phone, then this one came in and It all became clearer:

JM2 JM2 It took me awhile to find one, but they come up pretty regularly on ebay and other sites foe under $200. Mine came with minimal use for $150. Well worth it to me. I love it.

I know it... as I drool over them from time to time. I'd actually get more use out of one than I do some other knives I have. I've thought about it quite a bit!
