On a (loosely) related subject, I asked in one thread how much thermal stress busses could handle without destroying the temper. Jerry's answer was that Busses could handle up to 900 degrees for an hour without damaging the temper. That is several hundred degrees hotter than what most other knives could handle (for mere seconds or minutes) before their tempers were ruined. Just one of many ways in which Busses offer a wider parameter of performance than most other knives.

You can safely use 'em to cook food over an open campfire, if do it with a bit of sense.

But I need something that can take prolonged exposure to a few thousand degrees, for magma sculpting.

Well, being that lava comes out at about 2100deg Farenheit I think you could hurt a Busse pretty quick.

Or melt most other wussy knives just by being near it!
 
Perhaps sculpting tools made out of monocrystalline silicon carbide.

I bet it wouldn't be cheap to have tools made out of that.

Maybe I can sculpt my sculpting tools out of some other kind of rock with a much higher melting point than magma. Anybody know what kinds of rocks have even hotter melting points?

Not sure... you might check into ceramics. Some of them have pretty high melting points...
