Let's Congress

This is a picture of knives recovered from the Steamboat Arabia, which sank in the Missouri River, September 5, 1856. I believe they were packed in barrels. There appear to be knifes of the Congress pattern in the group - at least five (5)). The date the steamboat sunk should help with determining when the Congress pattern came about.

Sorry for the size of the picture but it shows details of the knives clearly. NOT MY PHOTO - taken from the net.

I believe these knives were from Sheffield. Charlie (waynorth) could probably add a lot to this.

Great thread with great knives! Inspired me to take a couple of pictures of my 6488 from '74. I do carry it regularly although it's a bit bulky :D

This thread is very timely for me. I have recently "discovered" this pattern after ignoring it for some time. I started out with a small investment a la rough rider. I do this as often as possible before dropping more money on an American made knife.
It took me about a half day to realize the beauty and utility of this pattern. I was also struck by how well it felt in hand. Here's the knife in smooth white bone. For $10.02 shipped I'm more than pleased. And it's very sharp.

My favorite pattern.
I try other patterns, but I keep coming back to my congresses (is that a word?).
I love the shape of the handle, and the fact that the blades all stand out of the middle like petals :)
My favorite knife is my Colt stag bone stockman.
It has spear, pen, sheepsfoot, and coping blades with long pulls and impressive swedges on each.
I dyed the scales black, and it rides in my pocket far more than all of my other knives put together.

Great knives everybody :)

Here is my 'jumbo' side by side with its smaller brother:

this has its own thread, but it fits with this thread: as Blaine christened it, the 'knife for ants', miniature pre-WWI viennese Congress,

practically unused, I suspect for the reason that it is practically impossible to get the little blades out, even the most delicate feminine fingers would have problems

Being halfway interested in the Congress,
I decided to order the Half Congress.

Tidioute
Dark ruby jig bone
Wharncliffe/coping
1095

When I see "last one in stock- no reorders",
that knife seems like the last kid chosen for teams on the schoolyard.
I tell it, "You can be on my team, son."

Speaking of half Congress, here's my latest two, an Eye Brand and a Schatt & Morgan

I love this thread. I'm eagerly awaiting a Boker congress that I bought from the exchange. Such a gentleman's knife the congress is.
