Let's get to the bottom of Neck Knives !

My Canoe hangs in a neck sheath from a hook over my kitchen counter. If it ever does get to go out, it will be as a companion to the big Wilderness knife. :)

But it is a tough, thick little blade, which would complement the lighter blade of a SAK nicely.

Does anyone use a cord instead of the beaded chains to hold their neck knife?

If you use a cord, it's best to put a breakaway clasp on it. Last thing you want is to be strung up by your own paracord.

Me, I hate those beaded chains, ever since I got one tangeld into my beard!

I use paracord or leather cord, but like Guyon says, I rig them with a break-away.

i too use p-cord or a leather strap, rigged with a break away... i really don't like those beaded chains either... :)

I have used the Cold Steel B&T fro some time as a necker. I keep meaning to send one to a good smith for a custom based on it in a good steel with slim scales. I really like the ring for such a tiny knife.
My chain has gutted paracord over it for comfort- the cord does not attach to itself, stops just short of the chain clasp.

Here is a quick picture of the HRLM worn on my chest. Its comfortable while sitting, wearing a seatbelt, or while wearing a pack with a sternum strap. (its a little high for a sternum strap in the pic below though)

I chose this particular method because it does not swing or print unless you are wearing a tight elastic shirt. If you prefer the position of the mercharness but want to avoid the swinging you can easily just position the knife under the arm with this set up.

The cord over the shoulder can also be replaced with webbing if you prefer, and it is currently attached to the elastic chest strap in the back with a d-ring and canvas slider I made.

great Idea! Now I wonder if I could do that with an RD-4.......

Does it affect your breathing while hiking? Seems like it may constrict your chest. But looks like a cool rig. Have a pic of the back?

Nah, You forget its there after a few minutes. The chest strap is elastic unlike many of the commercial versions, so it allows you to move and breath while keeping the knife against the body. There is a bit of give when you draw the knife but if you use the right elastic its only slight. I'll get a few better pictures when I'm done braising tonights chicken.

As for the RD-4, as long as its not too long for your height and you are making your own kydex, then it should work well. On my nimravus and HRLM sheaths the depression where the scale mounting hardware is provides an excellent additional positive retention for inverted carry. There is a slight flare on the spine side that if you slide your thumb into eases the tention on the knife helping the draw. I'll get more pictures of this as well.

Good idea, the chest hair isn't liking the beaded chain. I was going to ask some of my buddy's that had been in the service what they used on their tags.

I'm gonna go try that myself right now!

Just did one up. Here's a hint: Cut your paracord to length, then tie one of the thin inner strands to your neck chain, and use the thin, inner cord to pull the neck chain through the outer shell of the paracord as you remove it. This works alot easier than trying to snake the neck chain through the paracord shell alone.

I used my lighter to melt down the frayed ends of the paracord, and just moved the chain in and out slightly so it wouldn't stick. It took all of about five minutes to make it up, and its much more comfortable then just the chain alone. Thanks for the tip!

I've been wearing a BM-Snody 210TK for awhile now. It's only about 2oz and, while if I think about it I can feel its weight, most of the time I never know it's there.

I like stainless on a neck knife, unless you just wear it occasionally. Mine is with me every day, all day, from getting dressed in the morning until getting undressed at night. I wear it under my shirt, but on top of my T-shirt. There's alot of humidity that close to your body, or at least enough of a small amount that if you wear a neck knife often, I would think you'd want stainless. The BM-210 is in S30V.

I use paracord that is strung through a two-hole cord lock. It holds the knife firmly, even for an unsupported draw from the Kydex holster, yet with enough force the cord will slip out of one or both holes in the cord lock. If you want something like those, you can order them here http://www.countycomm.com/CORDLOCK.htm

Thanks Mike. The elk I'm using is from a full 5X5 rack I got in a trade. It's bleached out but after you work it on the buffer it looks like jewelry.

Thanks for reminding me about these S30V beauties. I just ordered two of 'em (1 plain finish and 1 black DLC finish).

Anyone know where I can get those breakaway thingies?

Thanks again!

I just started making my first knife today and I think I'm going to use it as a neck knife. 1/8 in. thick weld steel(no idea about it, just picked it up at Lowe's) haven't decided on drop or clip point yet. 3.5 in. blade with a 3.75 in. handle(may or may not get skeletonized). I'll post a thread with pics when I get it finished sometime next week since I'll be gone this weekend.

Edit: I also don't want it to be a true neck knife. I want to get one of Mercop's Mercharnesses because of the great things I've heard about his stuff and from my little bit of interaction with him he seems like a great guy!
