Let's not split hairs here, let's split backs! - Post your whittlers

The sickness has claimed another chunk of my overall credit utilization. I found myself a S&M that I ordered, along with one of the last few light ebony norfolk whittlers on KSF. My intent is to pick a favorite when they arrive, but I am sure we all know how that usually turns out... :p

I have more split-backs than any other pattern.

My favorites, by far out of all the brands I've tried....are the Norfolk, 33, 57, and 38. Which one to chose would really depend on your hand size and whittlin' media/size of choice.

In the last four weeks I've gotten my hands on two quite expensi e whittlers. One is a Case Select Sowbelly, not a whittler but same linerless blade layout. The other being a nearly 100 year old Case whittler with one brass liner that tapers off. The older one needs an overhaul, but I like the newer one.
Could anyone comment or VM me about carrying this style everyday? I'm unsure of how durable and sturdy they are for some reason.

Pics will come eventually.

I've found them to be as durable and sturdy as a stockman. Since the main rides on two springs, the pull is sometimes stiffer than the secondaries, which each ride on a single, thinner spring, and can have a lighter pull. It may take getting used to, but it's sort of the nature of the pattern.

Here's a few backspring pictures. An old Case with tapered center liner:

And a linerless BokerUSA, with tapered springs: I believe the tapered springs compensate for the hard/ soft pull issue by giving each blade an equal thickness of spring.

Looking forward to seeing your overview video/s when they arrive! [emoji1303]

Hey guys - at this point I have changed the thread title because the bug has bit. At this point, keep the whittler photos coming!

Slightly tapered springs on this H&R made in 78. Love the feel of the white oak covers reclaimed from whiskey barrels.

Here's the roughly 100 year old gift I received from my favorite golfer.

Blades are in great shape, hardly used. Everything else is worn away quite a bit, even the shield is blank. The walk and talk hardly exists, and the tapered liner sticks out a lot. Case said they wanted some pictures to see if they could do anything, but who knows if they're willing to help me.

I might just cut off part of one of the blades on my Sowbelly too, to make a sheepsfoot. I'm waiting until I can get some inspiration though, and I might just chop the main blade down to a wharnie.

First one arrived - my light ebony Norfolk whittler. Loving it so far and it's in the pocket today!

If you run out of ideas, I think it would be a great candidate for some TLC to get back to snappy condition.

Jprime, for now it will be left as is and displayed. Once I'm more free financially I'll be hiring Glenn or someone able to work on it to restore it.

Here's the sowbelly, I posted it in the modified thread already. Not super polished on the swedge but it flows well.

Actually, split-backspring whittlers are pretty much a thing of the past. A true split-back whittler is a single spring knife, with a split at the secondary blade end (shown below). I don't know of anyone making them currently. All the two spring whittlers are actually just that, wedged two-spring whittlers.

Sure glad I snagged mine when I did if you bought up one of the last!!! :) Snagged mine probably the day or so before you bought yours, I use the Seahorse also and I think it's great, but definitely not as nice as a GEC. After looking forever for a #38, or #congress whittler, or warnie #57 and not finding ANYTHING, I jumped on the Norfolk. So far I am pleased. Got a #57 on the way with Clip point, I wish someone could convince me it's cooler than the warnie, because I feel like I am settling for something less with the clippoint main blade. But I figured I better swoop it up before they are all in one mans collection also.

That is a very cool knife! I had not seen any like that before. I suppose wedged whittlers is what the title should refer to.

I've got quite a few Whittler's. They are definitely my favorite pattern by far. Here are my two Seahorse's. I'll post more later this week.

I really really like these seahorse Whittlers. Not something I like to EDC a lot, but I sure do love the way they look and feel. They are fantastic for whittling as their name suggests.

Figured I'd add few whittlers to the thread.
Here's a couple from Canal Street,
