Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

Hah, yes, a couple times I wondered!! as the end of the #6 isn't all that large! My first attempt at carving, I'll try to do better next time! Going to get some balsa wood from one of the hobby stores and maybe do a ball in a cage thing, they certainly look cool. That Beech wood on the Opinel is pretty hard stuff, not too hard but some hardness to it when cutting into it. My grandson liked it ;)

Thanks guys and Carl, yep a #12 would certainly have helped, after I practiced a bit more I may give that a go as well !

thats a nice looking knife.

Since more than 50 years, i use stainless OPINELs.
As a younger man, it was a No. 10 or a No. 9. Getting older, it was a No. 8 or No. 7, because i have learned one thing:
A blade must not be LONG, but it must be SHARP!

Ok, these Opinels are no real beauties... but they are good friend, you can count on 100%! The only problem may be, opening and closing the blade, if the handle is wet.

Since a few month now, i have a very special OPINEL, with a handle out of a synthetic material, looks like carbon. Now i'm 100% lucky, no problems anymore ... and my black friend is in one of my pockets the whole day long. THE PERFECT KNIFE :)

I would buy a few more as a "reserve" for the next years, if i could, but sadly it was a very limited series, they sold during the 100th anniversary of the "Galeries Lafayette" in Paris.

I wish I'd had time to take a group shot before the Diaspora, but at least I got to see 'em:

My oldest son bought Opinel Carbone No.7s for the members of his (8/10) wedding party and assorted friends, each with the recipient's last-name initial on the blade, a wondrous array.

Two yet to be delivered:

(Yes, the edge in the foreground needs a little work. ;))

I'd suggested the idea to him after seeing some of the pictures here.

Thanks, everyone. :)

Old Boy, that black one looks amazing! very cool and pertinux, I really like how well they put the engraving on there, really snazzes it up a lot!
I've been waiting on them to get some #8 in Olive wood into stock and I will get something engraved on that one too.

Glad to see this one succumbing to the Lazarus effect..

Wow le mepris, just wow...

What a..transformation

Huh STV? Do you mean the thread or that knife has risen from the dead? I'm just curious how he made that handle. It look like he just gripped some soft material and then hardened it to make the perfect grip for carving, which is a pretty cool customization.

My (almost) constant companion No 6:

No 8:

Both of them turned into friction folders. Not because of laws, but because I like 'em that way ;)

Mine is in a transitional period right now! I was working from home today and got side tracked for a split second. I was modifying the handle of my Opi #9 last week to fit my hand better when I saw someone had painted their handle piano key black! I decided it to give it a try and mine is mid process right now, I'm going to wet sand after it dries, put on a clear coat.

I wet sanded it a bit but here's the finished handle

Hey, that's awesome!

What did you use to get that color. I love how you have both color and grain. Just great.

Thanks!

I used food coloring for the stain mixed at maybe 4 drops color / 8 to 10 drops water (adjust for your desired shade). If you care to give this a try, you will want to apply the color, let it dry and then without sanding (as the water based stain will have raised the woods grain) apply a coat or two of Poly or Lacquer before sanding with fine paper and then applying your last finish coat.

In the past I have used spray lacquer (the #6 pictured) but when I was refinishing my hardwood floors this past week I decided to use the floor poly that I was already working with on the #8 that is pictured and I much prefer both the look and feel of the poly finished handle.

The thread

I thought that was your knife, it looks very utlitarian but handle makes you go 0.O!
