That is so cool is that fired clay that you just gripped?[/QUOTE]

Its polycaprolactone (PCL) thermoplastic a miracle substance that is in the same league as duct tape. polycaprolactone (sold under the name InstaMorph or shapelock) has a melting temp of a around 110 degrees (cool enough to be molded by hand). once its cooled it can painted, machined (just keep it cold), carved, sanded etc. Acrylic paints were mixed with it when in was in 'liquid' state.

I just ordered a #7 today after looking at this thread. Thanks guys, you cost me 10 bucks

I am one of those guys that can't leave good enough alone. Looking at these pictures have made me decide I will do something to this slim Opinel nr 8. The only thing I really dont like in this knife is the red text on the handle, it looks cheap. Most likely I will turn this to a dedicated friction folder, it is a light use/food prep knife anyway. Maybe take some wood of the sides of the handle to flatten it, round the butt, burn and then seal the handle with epoxy...

Looking forward to reading what you think of it - the collar lock is a clever design, and that carbon steel takes a mean edge. The No. 8 and my BK14 are my main eating/food knives.

Here I am admiring the red handle :D

Messed around in the garage this evening with my no8. Goal is to get as light, flat and pocketable as possible. Its down to 33 grams :D just a bit more to go and she will be at 1 oz. Its so slim now as well and disappears in my pocket. Still got a little work to go and hope to finish it up this week.

This is awesome! Great great work. Can't wait to see the final product.

Just kidding around. nice work.

i did that one for my uncles birthday a few months ago...opinel #8 12c27 reshaped the handle and gave it a linoil bath for 2 days, made filework on the blade, polished blade, "aged" the box and made a engraving shield, stuffed out the box. leather sheath bought, not selfmade.

Wow, great job on the knife, case, shield, filework, etc. Nice overall package. I have a plain old 1980's set of Opinels. My first try at pictures so hope it turns out.
