Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

Nice work guys especially those #8s and especially yours Bjoern! That is the nicest remodeled Opinel I've seen yet!
Here is the refinished for the second time #7...

I gave the lock ring a sheen finish at the rear of the ring where the made in France #7 is stamped.

I just ordered a #8 Garden Knife which I have yet to try. I'm going to just sand it down and stain it. This #8GK will be gifted to my best buddy who is a knife guy but doesn't have an Opinel yet just the Cold Steel version. He doesn't like carbon steel for using. If I like it I may have to get a #8GK for myself.

My first and so far only Opinel...No. 8 stainless purchased from Baronyx. Hasn't seen much use besides some fruit and a monster ribeye steak, but I really, really like it...cuts like a laser. I may mod the handle a bit in the future as it feels a bit bulky in my pocket. Either that or purchase a No 6.

Well, I couldn't leave well enough alone. I was inspired by the handle shape of a newer Condor machete and a modified Marbles machete handle I ran across here on the forum. I reshaped the handle and dropped the tip a bit. Sanded and dipped/wiped with BLO. I also sanded/stoned the spine to round it off a bit so it wasn't so harsh in my pocket. I like the way it turned out, even if the ergonomics might not be as good as the tried and true stock unit. However, the more I use it, the more I like the feel of the new handle. Either way no worries, I'm sure I'll end up with a few more Opis in the future. At least one will get left stock, probably.

Here's a couple of pics of a #8 Opinel pruning knife which I purchased and had custom inscribed for a friend of mine. He's been developing a vineyard on the side for a few years now. He retired from aerospace engineering and is now working the vineyard full time. I thought he might find a pocket pruner handy. I gave it to him on his last day at work. He loved it.

I should add that I was very impressed with the design of the knife. It's shape is optimized for making pull cuts. Most people find it easier to control a pull cut than a push cut.

Hey Frank, nice Opinel, inscription and gift to a friend in the aerospace industry. I also always admire your SR-71 avatar because my Father worked on them in '65-'66. I like Opinel's so much I bought 2 old sets from what looks like pre '80's when the vibrolocks were nickel.

Dave308ek, Thanks a lot for the dating chart. Wondered if there was such a thing now I have one.

Here is my #6 carbon (also a #6 olive wood and walnut wood in the back).

This was my first Opi and it's been through a lot. I left it closed on a bookshelf for a couple months and it ended up having some corrosion (raised spots on the blade). Weird thing is, I have a #7 in a box with one of those desiccant packets and that even has corrosion on it. I live in Hawaii so that might explain it. I decided to put some sandpaper to it to smooth it out and polished it up and it seems good as new besides the war marks of course :P.

In the early 90's or late 80's I ordered my first 2 no.8 Opinels out of the Garrett Wade catalog.
They were a regular clip point and a spear point.
Does anyone know when they stopped offering the no.8 spear point in carbon steel?
