Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

Thanks Pete. It came polished.

Originally I was planning to swap out the blade but I like this too much.

Indeed, while I was suspect of the Slim model, it's really growing on me a lot, everyone at work loves it, says the blade looks wicked, I tend to agree. I hand sanded the ebony to almost a polished wood feel, it feels very very smooth and nice, pretty cool stuff, showed one guy he said wow that's sharp, then asked if it was sharp and of course I had to remove a patch of hair I didn't care much about any more, he was very surprised at how sharp it was.
I'd liked to have had a way to put a fob on there but there isn't much room, I carry it in my watch pocket, fits perfect :)

From the looks and numbers of posts, it seems like we have enough members for, dare I say it, an Opinel cult.

Nice, those look pretty rustic. Do you have to tighten the blade pin when you make those slip joint?

Yes, I did tighten the pivot with a ball peen hammer. The tighteness is a bit different in all of them, the shortest one with a spear point is the lightest to open. They are all friction folders now, not slip joint.

After using my 1890 I really prefer no lock. It just feels akward using an opinel with a lock. It gets in the way. Without the lock I have a spot for my finger to lock in between the blade and wooden handle.

Modified my opinel, first one, go easy on me guys. Looks like crap but serves its purpose. Drilled a lanyard hole, removed material below the nail nick, softened the corners on the butt, removed the lock and carved my initials in it, upside down at that, haha.

^ cool mod Machine

A couple things I learned. First the ebony they used is JET black. I sanded it all down removing the varnish and I am working now on getting the contours to make nice flowing lines from end to end. I showed the knife to my dad and he asked why I painted my knife black, that was when I decided the varnish from the factory had to go. It did look a little like paint.

The other thing I learned as I worked down the back square with a file is that this stainless is MUCH harder than the carbon. The same file was taking steel off the carbon like butter but barely removing steel on the stainless. I don't notice a difference when sharpening though, so its odd to me.

Here are a couple pics as I work along

You made it your own, and the utilitarian touches like your initials, the lanyard, and the EZ-open notch are all what 'modifying' a tool should be about. Nice

Thanks guys. Have a long way to go before I start modifying ebony or other fancy opinels like yall do.
