Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

From the looks and numbers of posts, it seems like we have enough members for, dare I say it, an Opinel cult.

Carl.

Yeah, I'd say. Since my Opinels were stolen after a burglary, I need to replace them. I miss carrying and using them. It's a basic peasant knife that anyone from the age of Roman occupation until today can use. In my opinion, the blade shape is Ideal. I bought 2 #6 knives. One in Olive and a basic in carbon and switched the blades, so I had a #6 in Olive with a Carbon blade. I carried it in my lunch bag at work and cut steaks, and chicken etc for lunch. Had a beautiful purple patina forming, and some douche stole it. It woulda been a gorgeous knife, Olive with a purple patina. It cost maybe $17, but the evolutionary potential of that knife was worth far more.

One of the many youtube vid's I have seen had one Opinel that had what looked like a regular handle but the groove in the handle stopped about 3/4 of the way before the end, so the knife had a shorter blade than normal and a full wood handle near the butt end of the handle...The problem is I can't locate that vid any more and can't find that particular style knife any where. If you guys/gals know of this knife, I'd love to take a better peek at it and maybe try to get one too :)

Could it be a knife which was custom or home made from the raw/ebauche Opinels?

Or could it be the new Opinel Oyster knife?

FW while they are not an vendor on here so we can't put a direct link to their site, Opinel-USA carries the most, but also check out World Knives as well.

And Thanks LittleKnife, I think that is the one, an Oyster knife, don't eat oysters but ordered one of those today, now that looks like a very nice EDC folder and I have the feeling I'll be modifying that handle to suit me a little better ;) I'll post a thread if I decide to make the changes I'm already envisioning...

Got this one in the mail today. My first stainless Opinel. A no. 7 in orange. It's not as sharp out of the box as my carbon Opinels. I will try the ceramic rods tomorrow to see how this steel sharpens. Typicall the carbon Opinels get laser beam sharp after a few minutes with the ceramic rods.

So I learned what everyone already knows about Opinel Inox steel. With very little effort mine got hair splitting sharp, just like the carbon steel versions. It slices and dices so well i just cant put it down. The stainless No. 7 is a great little EDC knife.

Where's a good place to buy these knives?

I don't think any of our BF dealer members carry Opinels. Being as we only reference BF dealer members in our posts, I'd recommend you Google up the term "Opinel knives" and go from there.

I read somewhere that burning your initials in the ends of an opinel with a magnifying glass is the tradition. I decided I wanted to try on my 1890 work knife. I set up my magnifying glass.

I practiced a ton on a seasoned piece of beech wood I harvested from my woods. I oiled it to make sure I got the basic feel. Practiced for a while. Then time to do the cherry wood and it did not burn the same at all but none the less here are my meager results.

Did I mention I would not attempt this on my ebony version??? :o

Although it is now mine...

Thanks :)

I tried to fix the G wich is hard with a magnifying glass. I sanded the flats and buffed them out. It looks decent now. Rustic will be my substitute description rather than "learning curve". Haha :)

Okay, any kind of Opinel?:D

I love my Opinel saw as much as I do my knives! Cuts wood like a beaver on crack. I never go in the woods without it.

LOL! Know that's cool! I had no idea of such a thing.

Thank you very much, Carl :)

I had to do a little side by side testing for myself. I sharpened my 1890 and ebony opinel to similar sharpness, melting through newspaper. Wittled the same wood with both. Both edges still shaved the entire length. Then I got a pizza box and made cuts across the grain about 30 for each knife. I used the entired edge trying to do the same slicing motion. After this they both still cut the newsprint well, not melting, but well and would both still shave hair.

I know anyone can do this same test so its not worth much.

Isn't BladeHQ one of our dealers?
They carry Opinels I beleive

BladeHQ is a dealer member and they do list Opinels on their website. You learn something new everyday around here.
Thanks for the heads up CJZ.
