Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

Oh, gotcha thanks Gary :)

I have used both the stainless and carbon for the same stuff and they both held well. I found the stainless required less finishing to get an extremely fine edge.

After reading this thread this morning I put my No. 8 carbon in my pocket. I love it as a picnic/camp knife, but I find it a little big for EDC. So... I came home with a stainless No. 6 in walnut that fits in my pocket oh so sweet. I have a feeling it will be there for awhile. Thanks for the motivation!

This mirrors my experience. I love my carbon 8, but for EDC I really like the pocketability of the 6; and the good looking maple handle is a bonus.

Mark, is the maple handle a custom job?
I know that the No. 6 is sold in beech, oak, walnut, olive, bubinga and some of the other exotic woods, but I have never seen maple handles being offered.

I don't normally pocket carry my knives unless they have a clip. So the majority of my knives I carry in a sheath on my belt. Bought three different styles of sheaths from Opinel. All are great looking and makes for secure carry of all my recent knife purchases from Opinel.

I made this sheepfootish wharncliffe (or wharncliffeish sheepfoot) Opinel of a nr 12. I bought it just for fun but noticed that it was too big for any use I could think of (well, Jackknife thought of one in his story). So I started cutting it down to a manageable size and this is how it looks now. The blade lenght is about 85 millimeters. I tested it thoroughly last weekend at the summer cottage and liked it very much. It is a friction folder now, the effort to open it is about the same as my Douk-douk so you need two hands, but of course there is no snap. Feels very safe. Easy to sharpen and cuts branches, well about anything that needs to be cut so well. I think I will still tweak the handle a bit, take some material off the sides to make it a bit slimmer.

HFinn - I've really enjoyed your Opinel pics - those handles look great! And I like the modded blades too.
What are you using to cut and shape the blades?

Thank's for your kind comment. I use a Dremel cutting disk. This has the risk of ruining the heat threatment, but I go slowly and cool the blade often with a wet rag. Finishing is done with file and dremel sandpaper drum + fine sandpaper by hand.

Really liked looking though all the Opinel photo's in this thread.

Here are a few of mine.

I really like them for their ease of sharpening and their slicing abilities.

I like them so much, I made a video hoping to help others decide what is the right size for them.

Thought you folks might like to see some Fiebings leather dye on an opie handle. I posted this in Pennah s thread as well.
I rough sanded the handle, one coat of dye per colour. The more coats you apply the deeper the colour gets, the more you play with it the better the outcome IMO.

Best regards

Robin

The #8 Ebony arrived tonight I had them engrave a Celtic cross came out nice

Good size knife, now I know they designed it so the blade is angled downward but I prefer the spine to be more in line with the handle so I dremelled the back of the tang a little looks better to me ;)

IMO, the Opinel carries much better with the butt end of the handle rounded off a bit.

I carry mine in the RFP with the lock ring down. The lock ring nestles in the very bottom of the pocket while the rounded off butt end slips and slides easily against the back of the pocket. Unmodified, I can feel the knife more.

...I prefer the spine to be more in line with the handle so I dremelled the back of the tang a little...

Careful with that. I did that trick once before myself, only to find that as the blade comes up the locking ring must turn further to wedge the blade. Take off too much and the ring will eventually spin all the way around.

Yep, good point, it is a fine line to do this, a file doesn't seem to touch that blade too much, so the dremel to the rescue and I was fortunate enough to stop in time so it still locks up solid as well as being lined up starighter. Just a smidgen more and I'd have that going around like you said. Nice knife, I had hoped this would be it for a while, but, I think I will also pick up a little bit larger one...just because ;)

Nice one, Gary.
I agree, a larger size is necessary! ;)
My favorite Opinel is the No. 10, perfect size for my mitts.
