Lets see some Hinderer action

To Whitty, or anyone else knows -

I have two anodized XM's, I like to keep 'em clean just like the others. For now, I've just been wiping them down with a microfiber electronics-cleaning cloth, and that seems to get the fingerprints off pretty well.

But if I wanted to use an actual cleaner on it, what could I use that would clean it up nicely but not mess up the ano finish?

I tried a dab of Glass Plus on a soft cloth but I had to be quick because it left kind of streak marks that made it look lighter in places. Luckily, wiping it down with a bit of water on a cloth brought it back to normal like it never happened.

Any suggestions for cleaners on ano would be welcome. Thanks!

Just finished up edge and tune on this slicer.

Bobby - You definitely have some of the nicest edges that I've seen around here for XM's on BF. Also really love the snappy flip of your XM family. I tune all of mine the same way. My spanto came perfect and snappy but the other 2 needed a little tune up.

You would think it's mine being trans scale and all lol but It's a mail in and has to go home soon.

Aww lol I'd be tempted to send mine back in its place, haha.

But seriously, if I were the customer I'd be extremely satisfied. All of your recent tinkering on your own XM's has definitely perfected your methods. Nice work. Your personal XM family still has some of the best edges around, I remember seeing it on the YouTube video a few pages back. Crispy flips & polished edges; best combination when it's finally just right! That shot alone is a good advertisement for your sharpening business.

I actually use a small amount of windex on mine and keep wiping it until it is dry and the streaks are gone. Should bring the finish back to new.

Okay, cool, thank you. I wasn't 100% sure and you know how it is with these, I wanted to hear from someone that's actually done it successfully before I messed it up.

So far I've been able to keep your awesome ano job fingerprint free and streak free. I had used a tiny dab of Glass Plus but I think I just didn't wipe it enough at first, hence the streaks...because once I gave it another round of wipe-down, it scrubbed any streaks right off and actually brought the finish out even shinier.

Recent XM-18 purchase was that Black DLC Spearpoint KCenter exclusive. Of course it came with a ridiculous edge so I'm getting ready to do some reprofiling.

I haven't officially checked but eyeballing it I can see that it's clearly in the neighborhood of 30 dps. I'm bringing it down to about 20 dps.

Being my first DLC, I obviously want to preserve the coating while it's being sharpened so I'm a little apprehensive to get started on the stones.

I was thinking of just covering the blade with something like that blue painter's tape so it'll protect the rest of it while the edge area is being re-pro'd. Is that sufficient? Any better ideas?

I always tape the blades to prevent unwanted scratching, wiping away steel shavings can cause scratches....i also tape over the pivot area to keep shavings out of there as well.

Thanks, yeah that's what I was thinking too. I had a lot of steel shavings "dust" getting into the pivot area on the first round when I did my bowie. Just didn't think about that place at first...so learned (the hard way, lol) to cover it too after that. It's stonewash but I at least covered the blade because of the exact reason you said...I've seen the shavings cause little scratches on some of my friends' stuff and it's a preventable tragedy.

So, I've got that blue painter's Frog tape stuff that I'm going to go ahead and use on the blade & pivot, etc...and start the re-pro hopefully tomorrow. It's a good protector & it comes off nice & easy without leaving any sticky bits on the knife.

I've had enough of work for one day...too bad have to pretend for the next few hours. At least I have this to keep me company.

Hinderer knives have pretty bad centering. You can check out some youtube videos to verify this. Avoid this hyped brand.
