Let's see some Survival knife concepts !!!

I finally finished up one for me in between orders:D Actually, I was going to put 'er up for sale, but I found that it had a bit of a warp after heat-treat a couple of weeks ago, and rather than re-do it I figured it was a perfect oppurtunity to put one of my own on my side for a while;) 12 3/4" overall, about 8 1/4" tip-to-plunge line. The sabre ground 1/4" 5160 is thin enough to take a good edge, but tough enough to hold up, and fairly light to boot (especially compared to a similar sized convex ground knife)! The handle looks short, but it fits my (wide) hands well, and doesn't create any excess weight. This is as light and portable as I can make it, while still maintaining that comfortable SHTF heft:D

Now I've just got to make a sheath for 'er, and get some woods time:thumbup:
I like what you've done with this one. It looks like a beast and I love the fact that there is no wasted blade. The cutting edge begins right where I would want it to.

Thanks! On anything bigger I prefer having a choil, but this one's not so heavy that you'd need to choke up to have plenty of control:thumbup:

I see a few knives with areas suited as use as a draw knife - maybe for shaping a self bow? Would there be a benefit in having a knife with a choil like hole that would be suitable for shaping arrows as well?

I have often pondered the concept of a Swiss-army type folder with tools especially devoted to woodcraft. Maybe not exactly a swiss army folder, but more along the lines of an antique horseman's knife. Here's some old examples to illustrate:

But what tools would be best for shaping wood into tools and other necessary items for woodcraft?

I think I'd want to keep a main general purpose blade, and maybe a wharncliffe and a narrow, slender, convex ground pen blade for whittling. Plus a saw or two. Keep the gimlet for boring holes. How about sharpening the hoof pick for a crooked knife? And instead of a tweezers that slides out from under the handle scales, a small diameter fire steel? And a small diamond rod sharpener under the other scale. Maybe there could also be a way to incorporate a chisel, rasp, and something with holes for sizing arrows.

Here`s one I finished today. 13" overall, 8" x 3/16" blade. I left it in an "as forged" finish, and put torched and stained oak handles on it.

Here's a blade I designed, had waterjet cut out of 1/4" thick A2 by a local shop, and bevels ground by Dan Koster. Haven't got it back from Dan yet, but it will go to Paul Bos next I think.

Magua - that's one of the most beautiful big blades I've ever seen !
Congratulations !
Can't wait to see it finished

You wouldn't object to batoning that would you?:D

This was my first serious design.

Bill Siegle made it for me... It has come to be known as.... The Cutlass.....

To give you a sense of size, this is my holding it, followed by me holding a normal sized knife....

This is a great looking-no frills knife. What is the handle material? Is the blade 1095?

My crude re-interpretation of Jaguar Paw's blade (a catchy name by itself) with my stated preferences -

I think parts of the Filipino "bolo" seem to manifest themselves in it.

Interesting designs. I actually am working on a bolo, something very similar to these in 5/32" thick CPM 3V. However, the blade is 12" long and the grinds will vary a bit.

Steel is 5160.

Handles Scales are G-10.

Yeah, I like it alot. The blade is a little light for the handle, I think the handle would really come into it's own with a longer/heavier blade.

Nice! Allow us to see the finished product!

Not quite finished but almost ready for HT. Just need to do a little more sanding, some fine tuning on the profile, and drill and countersink the holes for the scales. The blade above the bolo has a 5" cutting edge. The bolo has a 12" cutting edge. Just a proto for me to beat the hell out of. It is important to note that the handle needs to be sanded down a bit. Its just too wide for for normal hands. The blade is about 2.75" wide at the widest part full flat grind. I think I'll stretch the lines out a bit for the next few though and make it more stylish.....
