Let's see some Survival knife concepts !!!

Happy to add my two cents.

As for a Nessie, the Condor will probably be the least expensive way to try a quality version and see if you like it.

To add to DWK2's post. I agree with him. Most people want more belly in the blade that will be using the knife to skin large game. Bear, moose, elk and the like. The belly allows you to have more cutting edge and not a longer blade. When you skin the animal your nautural motion is to sweep your wrist. The belly allows you a longer stroke. I hope this helps and makes sense.

Thanks for the additional clarification. For skinning, the one thing I like better than a blade with some belly is a "beavertail" design. The only factory version I can recall right now is the Knives of Alaska Muskrat Skinner in D2. The fact that it has a rounded end that is sharpened all the way around permits you to make even longer "sweeping" motions, as you aptly described them.

This is my camp/survival knife design. A few of the features are obviously the ferro rod with Blue G-10 and Moonglow handle with a fat lighter sheath. The knife is made of CPM-M4, it has a 8" blade that is 2" wide, it weighs approx. 15oz. and the balance is about 1.5" in front the handle. The drop down section on the spine is squared off for scraping fat lighter and other tinder and also for striking the ferro rod. The rest of the spine is rounded somewhat to allow use as a draw knife and battoning. Let me know what you think.

Here is my hunting knife also guys. This is made to be ugly so maybe noone will try to buy it. :D Pit I just wanted to say that I know this thread is about protos, but these started as protos.

The metal tool on the left is CRKT's PTS (pelvic tool sharpener). Acquired this at a gun show last week. 400 grit diamond all the way around with "hook" groove and the side can be used to sharpen serrations. It is designed to be used instead of a hatchet to seperate the pelvic bone while field dressing, just tap it with a rock or stick. Russ Kommer designed and I thought it would be useful.
Thanks for looking,
Donavon

Oh, the handles on both of the knives I posted is rubber like I use on my competition knives.

How about a survival backup/ neck knife prototype picture of an upcoming design from myself and TOPS?

SHANGO.jpg

The knife will be the one on top. Don't worry, those ridges will be very flat, not as protruding. 440C Flat ground, able to light/scrape magnesium and ferro rods with the knife IN the sheath. SHANGO is outa the bag!

Great pics guys! keep 'em coming!

though the pelvic tool looks useful, I can't help but laugh at the name :)

They're going to solve that problem by changing the name to the "crotch cracker".:o

-top one i got from gunknifenut(gene)-a browning knife he mod'ed.(did a great job too)

Lots of great knives here! I especially like 11X11X's 'survival butcher knife', it looks really handy.

The knife that sicily02 showed looks kinda like my old TruBal 'All American' Survival knife without the saw teeth.

I gotta get a pelvic tool, too!

The Shango looks like a keeper. Any chance of making the slot in the handle wide enough to store a firesteel and use the wrap to keep it in place, or maybe use O-rings, ala Atwoods tools?

I have a Pilot's Survival knife that one of the pilots in my squadron gave me back in the day,(along with an orange-handled switchblade) but they were free. I have an old (67 vintage, tool steel) Puma White Hunter that was the first 'real' survival knife that I spent my own money on. In the 'sharpened-prybar' class my current favorite is a Randall Fireman, sort of a SuperScandi. It's short, stout and sharp. It even chops pretty fair when you choke back on the handle.

Joe, that Shango is awesome! Great design. I love the scraper feature.

All the best,

Here is a concept I have (blade only).

A drawing has been sent to Great Lakes Waterjet for some blanks (one each in 3/16" and 1/4" 5160). I'd already planned on playing with a combo grind as well, though the model doesn't show it. Depending on how long it takes GLW to cut the blanks and this beginner to grind, HT and put handles on it, I hope to have them finished within a few months. Look for a possible passaround in the future:D

Very nice. Has a little of everything I like. Can't wait to see it. Drop point for thrusting or drilling, belly for skinning if needed, curved for chopping, bang the back hump for batoning, forward balance.
