LETS SEE THOSE MAGNIFICENT HARNESS JACKS

Here’s an interesting HJ, a Cattle Punch by Jason Richie. From reading some threads here the frame is based on an Empire Knife Company knife built for the Shadleigh Hardware Company called a Diamond Edge Cattle Knife. One of those knives was the basis for Tony Bose’s Diamond Edge Cattle Knife. He liked a clip point on it and that became the Case/Bose Cattle Knife. Jason‘s is a two blade and I think that punch is an Alford punch which was on the old Empire along with a spear main blade ( not positive on the 3rd blade ). I hope I got most of that right. I think Jason made a knife that is different but still a homage to a pattern with an interesting history. I would like to learn more about the pattern. And the knife is a really great build.
Ive noticed like that. View attachment 2269266
Lovely knife. I wanted to buy one similar to that from Windy City Knives, but they don’t ship to NYC (there is no actual reason or law and they are the only ones I’ve noticed like that). It’s a gorgeous knife!

Thanks guys. Shawn I am glad they shipped here. Generally we’re pretty hippy dippy here in Santa Cruz except we’re known for serial killers and now Otter 841 so the mail is safe. I have seen pictures of Diamond Edge Cattle Knives made besides Tony Bose by Tom Ploppert and Reese Bose. I liked the Case/Bose so much I had my eye on Jason’s for a long time. In fact it was a picture he posted of this one that got me thinking of an HJ. The frame on Jason’s is just a smidgen larger that the collaboration. Maybe to fit the spear point better. I remember reading that in a post.

We are pretty hippy dippy here in Brooklyn, but we don’t have the bad ass otter that you guys have.

I’m glad you were able to give Jason’s HJ a good home. Such a great example of the pattern.

I was surprised when GEC decided on red linen micarta for their 86 HJ and more surprised when they added a sheep foot blade
Sheep foot is not my blade of choice but I'm still going to try and get one because it's a different style HJ
I wonder if it will be harder to open the punch with the sheep foot having more blade in the way
My memory is not the greatest I don't think I've ever seen an HJ with a sheep foot blade do they exist

Shouldn't it be easier with the nail nick being higher and out the way?

If they didn't, they do now (in a very limited number)?

A sheepsfoot (or a Coping, Wharncliffe, Lambsfoot or Ramsfoot) makes some sense for a Harness Jack. Straight edge blades are used a lot more in leatherwork for cutting out the pieces and trimming than a spear point or clip point?

You're perfectly right !
But nothing prevents you from fixing your saddle AND cutting your steak 😂

Johnnythefox Johnnythefox hard to tell hope I get a chance to find out :)

afishhunter afishhunter as a leather craftsman I agree about a straight blade if we're talking about a bench tool
The HJ history I've read an HJ is a pocketknife with a punch and back in the day it was mainly used as a field tool to make repairs
I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong :D
