She's my gf... in case you wonder. We were trying out the new tyres and the 4WD. It did great.

img4978pequehc1.jpg

Yes I did get stuck, but it took just a minute or so to get it out. It is a heavy van... and the sand was way too loose.

I hope you like it!
Right now is waiting for a new gearbox and driveshafts. I bought it second hand from a dealer and right after buying it (less than 400km) it started making a strange noise. The good news are that I won't be paying a single cent... the bad news is that the spare parts won't arrive untill April.

What were you two doing to get the front windows all fogged up?:D

I've been stuck in the sand too many times to count, I try to stay away from it whenever I can. Volkswagens run great, but geez are they hard to work on!

As soon as I previewed my post I knew someone was going to ask about that... :D :D :D That was our first night out with the van and we made the mistake of not keeping a little bit of a window open while SLEEPING (ok ok, there was some R&R involved as well... getting that van was something to celebrate!). It is just too well insulated... and very warm.

The funny thing is that my parents own an apartment like 1km away from that spot that was empty at the moment... but we wanted to give the van a try.

I am not a Toyota fan though the Surf has proven to be a topline vehicle for touring Africa. Pity it is only available as a Singapore/Japanese 2nd hand direct import. The other Toyota SUVs, available new, are tar-babies.

I'd love to get a turbo diesel in the states!

My folks have the common-rail 1.7 turbo diesel Opel Corsa hatch, easy to town drive, open road they chugg along at 130-140kph 80mph-88mph. 55mpg(imperial).

My Gabz office has a Kia Sorento turbo diesel 4x4auto and we sit on the trans Kalahari at 150kph at 36-38mpg (imp)

There is one hang up with turbo diesel, you need to be carefull that they don't sell you high sulfur diesel that eats the turbos.

Indeed, they are. The vast majority of 4 wheel drives now are tar babies, not only Toyota's.

Even Hilux Surfs are. Mine is a 2nd generation Hilux Surf, which shares its chasis with its Hilux pickup brother of the same age and earlier.

However, 3rd generation and newer are Hilux Surfs ONLY in looks as they are built on a Toyota Prado chasis and have many other changes. All newer Hilux's are high end luxery vehicles really not meant for off roading. They are effectively no longer Hilux's despite the somewhat similar looks.

My 2nd gen is the last of an era for us Hilux fans. My father used to have a 1989 Toyota pickup (Hilux) when we lived in the US so I've been around these for quite a while.

I tell you, the Taliban use these trucks for a good reason! Really tough vehicles.

True, just the other day a large truck delivering gravel to my ranch blew its turbo and died right in front of the main gate. I heard it blow up coming up on the street, it was loud as a bomb. I've heard of many people having problems with their diesels due to bad diesel and it's an ongoing worry. Hairdryers cost a lot of money!

Are turbo diesels not allowed in the US?

G'day, Not as flash as some but heres my 79 hj45 Toyota Landcruiser ute, It's a little rough on road but has no worries off the beaten track, she's in the shed for a little needed restoration at the moment

When i'm out and about with the family it's a 94 Ford Courier dual cab ute, she's fairly comfy on road and not to bad off, not as good as the cruiser but does the job
