Let's see your good old basic fixed blades, Bowie's, Stickers, etc.

Nice  The sock stuff is just an invention of Walter Scott, a more typical carrying place for the Sgian Dubh was the armpit

True, it would be carried in the armpit until visiting a friend's house where one would place it in the sock as a sign of respect.
While Scott wrote about this in his book "Waverley" he was referencing tradition that pre-dated him.

Do you know what leather that is? My understanding is shagreen can apply to any textured leather (shark, stingray, beaver tail etc). Very nice work.

That is indeed a great translation. I forget often that translation is needed for most.

Our neeps here are completely different. Not gonna work. Ever tell ya about a time in Strontian? Up there fishing. My friend I was with had a buddy that lived there and so we were kinda locals. We were trying every single malt the three pubs in town had. Stopped playing darts cause the darn dart board wouldn't hold still after a while. Was talking to some folks about their Jack Russell terrier. They were amazed that I knew what kind of dog it was (the folks I lived with on that estate had one). I can remember thinking I need to set my glass down now because I'm gonna fall off this stool. Don't remember if I did or not.

That looks great Dylan. I've never had haggis for breakfast. Looks like I've been missing out!

Customer sent me a knife he'd broken the tip off Finished this off while I was finishing off that wee dram:

I don't know what type of leather is on the sheath.
Any suggestions welcome.

No I'm kinda baffled. Beavertail is very uniform like that but the texture is the wrong shape. Shark isn't as uniform. Ray is more dotty. I dunno. Where abouts are ya? Sat my Highers at Waid Academy in Anstruther. Lived in St Andrews and the Highlands too.

It was made in Aberdeen. I'm from Inverness but live in the Borders now.
When I Google Lizardskin Shagreen it looks similar, could be that?

That's a great tale Dave, thanks for sharing it my friend :) I'm hoping to get up to see some friends in Perth in the Spring, and possibly further north to see another :)

Ouch! I'm glad you were able to fix that up Dave, well done :)

I've heard the tale :) Scott built my house, (or at least his money did), but I think he invented a great deal of romantic rubbish, not only in his works of fiction, but most notably in preparation of the visit to Scotland of George IV, when a lot of the pageantry and fancy dress, now passed off as history, was also invented. Apart from Scott, perhaps the greatest promoter of modern 'Highland dress' was Queen Victoria :)

Even in the shorter length it looks like it would make quick work of processing small and medium size game.

All this talk of haggis....

Made this up a week or two ago. Haggis, eggs, and toast - makes for a fine breakfast. It is my buddy's recipe and it is most certainly not vegetarian ;).

(Knife content below - a couple of fine knives from a maker I've come to admire)

They do look similar. Probably lizard of some kind I don’t work with those kind of exotics so I don’t really think of them. My only border time was about a week in Dumfries. Know Inverness pretty well. Where I lived in the Highlands when we went to town it was to Inverness. We were south of Aviemore so bout 45 minute drive or so if I remember correctly

I don’t know if this belongs on the traditional board; Mods please delete if inappropriate.

This is my Springfield Armory Model 1904 Hospital Corps Bolo. Mine is stamped on the blade 1913 making it 110 years old. It’s a little hard to make out but I believe its sheath is stamped “Rock Island Arsenal 1912 H.E.K.”.

I've just received this Walnut Kephart from Brisa of Finland. I'm really pleased with the knife, and dealing with them directly was a great experience :) Looking forward to getting out and using it
