Let's see your good old basic fixed blades, Bowie's, Stickers, etc.

I just got this beast in the mail today, does it qualify ?;)

It's much heftier than I imagined, and I didn't realize the stag would be such fat slabs.

sadly the stag can't be saved.

The mark side scale is very warped and the bark is peeling off.
I think I'll have to go with some kind of wood, I don't think I'll be able to find some appropriate stag scales that don't cost an arm and a leg.

As long as the tang is flat, then the scales can be flattened to mate with it as well. Won't be as fat after. Probably a good thing. No need to waste the scales. I'd offer to do it but I can't stand the smell of organics on the grinder, even through the respirator.

I tried, but because of how they just tapered it down to meet the guard it ended up too thin in that area.
I probably could have gotten the scales back on with the new guard I made, but the holes were drilled through the scales at odd angles and I couldn't get them lined back up.

Just been posting this one in another thread Tod Cutler Rugger/Bauernwehr

I will probably get some walnut and redo it eventually, but for now I used a piece of Japanese hackberry that I saved when I pruned my tree in the front yard a few years back.
it's a perfectly adequate wood that's about as hard as walnut, but it's very pale and yellow so I torch darkened it.

I couldn't find the rest of my brass, so I went with a piece of 3/16 mild steel and fire blued it.
I'm quite happy with how the guard fitment came out too, I spent a lot of time getting it just right.

I could just as easily say it's " rustic " or say it's " period correct " ( not really though ) and call it a day.

Mild steel?
could you send me in the right direction towards your process?
I have an upcoming project I am donating my time on, and this steel/look would be perfect for the guards I want to make.
Thanks.

are you unfamiliar with mild steel ?
It's simpld cold rolled plate steel from Home Depot.
I just cut, shaped, and sanded it, then degreased it, heated it red hot, and dunked it in oil for the desired blues finish.

Nope, have a machine shop where I work. All kinds of steel, just didn't know If it mattered with what is "Mild"
I guess I will play around, and do a more in depth search of mild steel guards.

Thanks again. I like it's utilitarian look...... All Business.

it doesn't matter what kind of steel you use, I just had this scrap of 3/16 mild steel "welding plate" as Home Depot tends to call it laying around.

Nice work

I only have one big classic Bowie

it's certainly a lot classier than mine is.

I sort of have another.
My brother left this cheap $20 Winchester Bowie with me in a box of junk when he moved out of state a few years ago and hasn't bothered to reclaim it after moving back.

I just kept it around as a place filler of sorts so I could at least say I had a sizeable Bowie knife, next time I see him I'll probably bring it or remind him that he needs to claim it.

Thank you, I don't think mine is a particularly practical blade, it's rather heavy, and unwieldly. This Condor Moonshiner is slightly smaller I think, but better balanced. I've only used it out in the garden though :D
