I thought it would be fun to do a thread focused on home made or modified gear that we use. I've been working lately on hobo stoves, alcohol stoves and billy cans so I'll start with that.
This one is made out of a formula can that we use for our youngest. It's rare to find metal cans nowadays.
Inside of it is nested a peaches can with two holes cut and a bit of coat hanger for the handle. I also cut two sections of 1/8" "music wire" for pot supports.
You can see the pot supports in place. There are also two lower positions if I'm using an alcohol stove which works very well. The hobo stove then acts like a big windshield directing the heat up beside the billy can.
Here it is all fired up with my 3 1/2 year old feeding the sticks. It worked great, boiling water with just a small pile of twigs and sticks.
Here it is under full boil. I was impressed with how well this worked. I used the can opener from my boy scout knife, some needle nose pliers, some tin snips, two sizes of drill bits (could have used one) and the fore mentioned wire.
Well now, let's see what you've made from household stuff, or the gear that you've significantly modified to make it work better.
