Let's see your homemade or modified gear

I thought it would be fun to do a thread focused on home made or modified gear that we use. I've been working lately on hobo stoves, alcohol stoves and billy cans so I'll start with that.

This one is made out of a formula can that we use for our youngest. It's rare to find metal cans nowadays.

Inside of it is nested a peaches can with two holes cut and a bit of coat hanger for the handle. I also cut two sections of 1/8" "music wire" for pot supports.

You can see the pot supports in place. There are also two lower positions if I'm using an alcohol stove which works very well. The hobo stove then acts like a big windshield directing the heat up beside the billy can.

Here it is all fired up with my 3 1/2 year old feeding the sticks. It worked great, boiling water with just a small pile of twigs and sticks.

Here it is under full boil. I was impressed with how well this worked. I used the can opener from my boy scout knife, some needle nose pliers, some tin snips, two sizes of drill bits (could have used one) and the fore mentioned wire.

Well now, let's see what you've made from household stuff, or the gear that you've significantly modified to make it work better.

this is the whole thing Its a wood gas stove and boils a liter of water in 10 minutes or less

benchmadebog,

Is the pot support welded to the inner can?

I'm going to have to try one of those wood/gas stoves next.

Do homemade knives count? :D

John

I think absolutely they would.

Of course this thread will get big real quick.

Anybody got pics of knives made from files or other old pieces of steel? Those are always cool too.

Would my Murse (Man Purse) count  ?

WOW, just plain WOW. Just kidding. I've been modifying a GI buttpack to make a Bushbag. Still got a couple of additions to do. I'll post pics of it here real soon.

So, what you carry in that thing? :)

River-8,

Here's my Bushbag I've been working on.

I just switched out the metal sliders for quick release buckles and added some straps on the back to carry my 12" Tramontina diagonally across the back. Hoping to get to give it a workout next weekend on a short hike and campout.

Here's some more stuff I've made.

This is a little pouch I made for cowboy shooting but would have worked nicely for a firestarting kit or whatever.

Here's my favorite knife I've made so far. I want to do it again with a bit larger handle.

And of course my ultimate homemade item. :-)

Yes, I'm a proud pappa of two beautiful girls so I'm always going to look for a way to show them off. This is Gracie. The older girl helping to keep the hobo stove running is Nevalin, my oldest.

Thanks for looking,

Charlie

Awesome stuff guys, I think Shepards may top em , for those who haven't made a baby yet,:)

River -8 , you made that bag? I would be interested in something like it.

I was on the web the other day and found this cool video on youtube.com it was about flipping a eveready 4.99 flashlight into a tactical light. I was like well it's worth a try. the video is at the bottom of my pics.
so I got on amazon.com and found the flashlights.

tabs.jpg

the video shows using a drill to take the tabs out. I didn't have that big of a drill bit, so I used and old screw driver and the stove burner to melt them out. then I cleaned it up with a 150 grit sand paper.

boreout.jpg

then I went to frys and got some cr123 ultralast batteries. 2 pack 3.50, I needed 3 so I have an extra for my other flashlight.

the left one is the mod flashlight. the right one is the surefire.

Here's a Skiving knife (leather working knife) I made for myself. I cut the steel out of a piece of 1095 carbon steel, ground it down into a chisel grind for left-handed use, put on white paper micarta scales using brass pins, then promptly dropped the damn thing and chipped the handle. :o

I made the sheath using 8oz veg tanned leather, gluing with Barge Cement and then stitching. I made the braided part just to keep my fingers busy. It really doesn't do anything but was fun to learn how to do! :)

Skiver.jpg

There is no belt attachment for this sheath as its intended purpose is just to protect the blade (and me) while it's on the shop bench.

That's some cool stuff guys. Do you have any pics of using the skiving knife?

Love the bottle holder and the possibles bag. I have the leather cut out for a set of saddle bags, just haven't had a chance to work on it though.

Never fails to crack me up to hear you call it that. My wife gives me crap about my Mountainsmith bag. I should show her this.

Off topic. Are you going to post pics from this weekend? If so where? I would like to see them.
