Let's Talk About Sharpening Our Survive! Knives

I got a Flexxx Strops Pro Field II with green and black, hopefully I'll be able to put it to good use!

Sweet defiantly keep us updated. I ordered a stropman with black and white. It looks like it may be a minute before I get it. I think it said about a month or so. If I don't destroy my edges I'll post an update. :D

Our sharpness levels went up a level or 2 at least once I learned how to use the DMT paddle strops with Bark River black / white progression. Wow. The VG 20 kabars and the 1095 Becker and some 52100 all benefitted... I am. Looking forward to using it on my 3v from Survive when I get them...

Oh you're going to love it! It'll take a bit of getting used to but once you figure it out you'll have some crazy sharp edges.

Great move

I am pretty excited to give it a whirl, i really want to get my sharpening game up to snuff, and like i said i mercifully have a few older, less expensive knives to start on. I also wanna give the axe and kitchen knives a chance to shine

The strop made it! Now to get practicing on some older knives before maybe BM Mini Grip...

Festive backdrop courtesy of the wife...

So far i sharpened an old gerber and my BM mini grip..i didnt make them duller, and im fairly sure the BM got a good bit sharper. It's M390 so a similar steel to survive stainless.... still working on it

Very cool, redwood! Great investment and I'm glad it is working for you so far.

Bonus points for the festive backdrop :D

I had more trouble learning to strop than I did learning to use a stone. Once you "get it," the results will be amazing.

Just got my email from stropman. My new strop and compounds will be here soon. Come on snail mail, pound you a red bull and get you some wings.

I primary strop and I use the Strop Bat from JRE Industries found here: http://www.jreindustries.com/strops.htm after I use my knives. I absolutely love this strop. But recently I've been pretty hard on my 4.1 so I've used the Ken Onion sharpener from workshop tools to take out all the nicks. I use the second version. It worked well. Guy suggested using 20 degrees for the KO WS and the Lansky sharpener that I also use occasionally. I've also found that I can use 3m Trizact P3000 pads that are used for polishing car parts (?). The are light and very easy to use and they work well. I used one to make my ESEE Azula really sharp. I think it's better for 1095 and 01 than 3v. But I keep a pad of it in my packs to maintain an edge after use.

To the SURVIVOR!s reading this, I know I'm preaching to the choir, but there still seems to be at least a small misconception on the difficulty (or lack of difficulty) on sharpening 3v. A few days ago I read a comment online from someone saying that 3v is great in the field, but the trade off is that it takes extra long to sharpen. This has not been my experience!!! After an afternoon of batoning and light delimbing AND several evenings of whittling and drinking bourbon all it took was 25 strokes on each side of the blade on a small fine diamond plate to get my GSO 5 back to shaving my arm hair. If you're just getting into SURVIVE! Knives and cpm 3v, let me tell you that this steel is very user friendly

This thread is really awesome. It is very cool to have so many people sharing their advice and experience with sharpening.

Not sure how much faster but it's definitely a lot better. D2, for instance, you pretty much NEED diamonds from what I've seen in my experience sharpening it. Diamonds just make shorter work of everything
