Lets talk GEC!

One can dream I reckon :D

That would be sweet, keep the cost reasonable and produce a large enough run that they stay available at a reasonable price for more than 5 minutes :(

Considering that Barlows traditionally have been more of a value oriented, low cost cutting tool, it would make good sense.

But this is GEC we are talking about.... I'm sure the market is there but people will still pay absurd prices.

Well there was a back and forth this afternoon on FB and a GEC person hinted that my 77 Yankee Barlow wasn't totally grown up. Or at least it was grown up "for now". So maybe?o_O

A 86 Barlow would be pretty slick... But then, Barlow anything would break the darn Internet.

As far as a daddy size barlow goes, bigger knives from GEC seem to sit on shelves longer. I mean look how long the 97 was available, some still on retailers shelves I believe. However like Pàdruig Pàdruig points out GEC+Barlow=big seller thats gone fast. I think even a 4.5-5 inch Barlow from them would sell quick especially a premier run. An 86 Barlow would be cool as well, but still would be pretty much unobtainium for me.

Wow count me in on farmboys. Those are great knives. That or similar blade configuration on the 15 pattern. What do they call that?

I'd like to see a Farm & Field version of the Barlow. Unpolished steel bolster with F&F stamp and delrin or Micarta covers - 2 blade configuration - that would be pretty sweet.
That would be a very fitting combo. Just an honest working-class Barlow priced reasonably and made for the masses. An all steel Barlow with F&F stamp, basic crescent nail nick and orange delrin would be really slick.

A rustic Barlow could be good, yes. But GEC Barlows are either TC or Mike's Northfield version so I think an F&F type is unlikely.

Here's the closest to 'rustic' Barlow the 17 Forum Knife in Micarta with a very nice simple Sheepfoot, never used mine but I like it a lot ;)

Me, I'm just obsessing over a WOOD scaled Bullnose for my F&F dream :D So much so that I think I'm embarking upon commissioning a re-handle

It probably isn’t GEC quality, but have you tried the Maserin Plow? They make one with palo santo covers.

They’ve done non-SFO Barlows, like the ones on the #25 pattern. I think what’s more unlikely is a Farm & Field that isn’t a shadow pattern. Maybe they could do a two tone F&F Barlow with contrasting Micarta “bolsters.”

This is how a Viper in Ironwood looks after me doing GEC's job for them and properly polishing it. The sanding grooves were deep in the shield & bolsters and took some time to sand and polish out. Very disappointed in the lack of workmanship on these and the 74's as far as finish goes. Satin is one thing but finishing with what looks like 100 grit paper and calling it good is another.

Ok, I’ll swap you for mine now but you’ll owe me some money since mine is NIT and yours is now used hahah. It looks awesome, can you walk through your process?

SteveC SteveC yes, I'd like to hear a bit more about your methods please. Knife now looks a prize item, got any 'before' pictures? Can't see how matte bolster would suit a Norhfield in the first place :rolleyes:

:D

Thank you, I did it mostly by hand started with 400 wet/dry paper up to 1200 then used one of those three sided nail buffing blocks you can get at the store. I finished with some paste wax and a quick buff on a dry wheel on my bench grinder. The scratches on the bolster and shield were very deep so that took some work. They left these even rougher than the 74 I buffed out.
