Lets talk GEC!

I'm looking forward to the 85s with 2 blades, I only have 1 and it's with a clip, a spear would be nice

I didn't catch that it was going to be a 2-blade version - this makes the knife a lot more interesting to me. Even if it comes with an EO notch, the added heft from a secondary blade might make it easy to overlook.

If GEC makes Barlows for say, the month of February (or any 4 week stretch), what would that be...about 2000 knives? Maybe put a dent in the drought?

My guess is that there will be @2k barlows when February is done - we'll see if that quenches the drought ;)

I didn't say anything of the sort...
I simply said that they are "aware" of what's going on... and will most likely do nothing about it.

Although I was not specifically referring to your comment, as I have seen more boisterous claims elsewhere lately - I will say that I am having a hard time discerning the difference in "the factory being aware of the market conditions and not willing to do anything about it" from "the factory controlling the market by inaction". But my apologies if you feel this was a dig at you personally.

Ahh, is this cache or mystic of GEC adding to or removing some of the fun of this hobby? Is FOMO taking over? Fear of missing out.

I lost interest in the KSF SFOs because it became too much of a competition. Also I would never buy on the secondary market at some extravagant inflated price.

At the same time I have some GECs I could put on the Individual sales here at a fair price and a flipper could grab it and double their money. It is offensive. Again fun impacted. FOMO become FOLO (Fear of loosing out). The pool gets shallower and again prices go up.

I once suggested folks leave the prices in their sale posts so we could see the progression of pricing. Why put sold to John Q Public for $$$$ instead of $100? What is the big secret? Is this helping the flippers?

Case or Boker looks better all the time and I am sure they are also profiting from this GEC inflation.

Cool... I just wanted to be clear.:thumbsup:
I don't believe GEC should do anything different on their end.
They are obviously business as usual and still providing product to their retailers at about the same cost as usual.
Of course we all wish they would grind out (see what I did there) 2,000+ knives in these desirable patterns so we could all get one.

My perception is Case has always been cheaper, and Boker the same, or higher depending on the model and materials.

I agree both companies have probably sold a lot more knives than they did before, due to the current situation.

The prices for Case and Boker seem higher to me.... I think that is influenced by the GEC phenomenon.
Some Bokers certainly are higher priced then a GEC from a reputable dealer but I enjoy the fact that I can shop around and compare patterns, take my time and enjoy the process of purchasing a Boker or Case, I wish that were true about GEC.

i think it is worth noting that Case employs over 300 people, and Boker somewhere around 150. Much larger operations than GEC. Ask Eric Albers how hard it is to keep quality knives in stock.

If GEC did some sort of poll to see what the most wanted pattern was and then produced 50,000 of those, would people even collect them?

Their scarcity is part of their appeal. Knowing that you can probably get back the money you spent on it if you ever decide to sell it.

If you just want a solid and well made knife as a user, there are plenty of those being made out there. A Vic Cadet is under 30 bucks and will do pretty much anything (plus more) that that ebony handled GEC 15 will do.

I suspect you all want GECs to be just plentiful enough so that you can get what you want and that's it.

Well, of course - we absolutely want that. Though, personally, if 50k knives were made of the quality that I expect from GEC, I would continue buying them. Scarcity doesn't drive my interests - a quality made cutting tool does (whether there are 50k or just 50). If Case consistently made knives of a quality that I can appreciate, I would be buying a lot more of them - they simply don't, however.

I think what largely has my jimmies in a twist is the toxicity that has come to coalesce around the GEC brand. This isn't GEC's fault - rather, it is the fault of those who would take advantage of the FOMO mentality. If folks simply refused to be taken advantage of, the scummy ones wouldn't have a market.

I will pay what I feel a knife is worth. GECs are nice but they simply are not nice enough to warrant the prices that flippers charge.
