Lets talk GEC!

There wasn’t a GEC cover of all three, but here’s a photo shared by a dealer (not sure they’re a supporting dealer, so I won’t say which) of all three together.

Hope he didn't drop all those before repackaging them!

Now that the drawing is finished, mind if I ask how many valid entries there were?

I'm guessing we had like a 1:10 chance? Am I way off, lol?

That would be interesting to know, I feel like I won a "golden" ticket!

That Osage is beautiful.

I bet!! Congrats! I wasn't drawn this go around, but I still really like the system and hope Mike sticks with it. :)

Good day everyone, I’m new to GEC, and knife collecting. I like what is see with GEC but I (like most) have found it hard to get one when they come out. I located a knife I am interested in but it is a prototype and it says it on the blade and the lid of the container. Does this ruin the value of the knife? I apologize if I’m in the wrong place with this question. I’m new and hoping to learn from y’all! Thank You!

Welcome to the Porch....... You'll like everyone on here except me....... AFAIK, PPP is the only marking that has any validity...... It presumably is a marking placed on a newly released pattern to signify every thing is up to snuff as the actual production commences........

The "Prototype" that you refer to, as I understand it, has little significance...... I have heard that Bill, Joan Mae or ?? randomly select a few knives and have them thusly marked........ I think it is intended to enhance market interest and seemingly it has achieved that goal....... S&M has "Factory Sample" which is to indicate that the knife meets all design and quality requirements..... Supposedly that marking is meaningful........

So there you have my brain dump for what it's worth........ Enjoy your time on the porch ....... Lots of stuff to read!!

Ok, so I admit it - I love the banana shield on smooth banana bone. I'm curious if you believe GEC will do another, and if so,
1. What pattern would you like to see for the next banana shield knife?
2. What style? Green, Ripe, Rotten or something else?
For the "something else" I have a few recommendations. How about "caramelized banana" or "banana bread" or "banana pancakes with syrup"?

Now I'm hungry.

... in reference to "Prototypes"; they are simply picked out of the middle of a tray of finished knives and etched prototype. Generally for one dealer in particular that gets a significant premium for them. Any dealer can request one ahead of time - most don't.

I never understood the prototype thing- I always figured a real prototype would never find its way into pockets so long as the company was solvent. I’d this just how GEC does that? Or is that a general trend?

So for those that follow the history of GEC production closer than I have, does GEC occasionally run a series of patterns only in the tidioute trim? I know the 35 was only in tidioute, outside of sfo, but I thought that was just a one off thing. Just curious with both the 15s and 85s only being announced in tidioute trim can we expect to see these come out in northfield as well?

The 85 Northfield trim is CKs. GEC has been making 1 last SFO for each of it's dealers. So maybe there is more going on, maybe not. No one who knows is talking.

A few things you should know:

1. GEC collecting is WAR!
2. GEC collecting is a full time job.
3. See 1 and 2.

I really agree with the full time job part. I’ve noticed I’ve been spending too much time and effort trying to get some of these it’s making the hobby not enjoyable.

I told myself I will walk away for a bit from the GEC drops. Constantly checking forums, emails & dealers’ websites to maybe get my hands on one isn’t something I find fun anymore.

I actually did this a few years ago but got back into them again.

They did do some Northfields in 2017 .

I probably should have clarified. I was more referring to the recent run of 35s. They had a run of the B&S in the tidioute trim and the rest were SFOs. From what I recall, usually each pattern they run gets a tidioute and northfield version. At least as far as I can remember, but I could be mistaken. It could be more common then I'm aware of.
