Lets talk GEC!

I was thinking today...
When a knife releases, I get bored with it quickly.
I mean you see a whole bunch of us posting pictures of it singing its praises.

But then...
Several months (or years) down the road somebody posts a picture of it again and i get all excited to see it.
I guess I just like knives that aren't the "new biggest thing" or the current "must have"... I like individuality I guess.
I like the fact that somebody liked that knife enough to carry it instead of the new, whizzy-cool, knife of the day.
I think that’s just your wisdom coming through- it’s easy to get excited when something is new, but another thing all together if you still like it down the road.

our impulse to acquire something new, I think, is driven by personal boredom or dissatisfaction with other aspects of life. Once we get past knife #5 it’s essentially a form of entertainment to distract ourselves. Sometimes the frivolity intersects with the right product and we end up with a new good tool we genuinely appreciate, but in general most of the time that “next knife” isn’t doing much that the precious 27 couldn’t. Especially since we only use one at a time. Maybe take the others out and admire them and put them away again.

EngrSorenson EngrSorenson , JohnDF JohnDF , Good grief guys this is simply a fun hobby, not a Rorschach test. Everyone enjoys it in a slightly different way, and that is fine.

It is going to be very interesting to see if GEC continues with the large runs. They are obviously trying to appease people who complain about the lack of supply. However, there is a flip side that could be dangerous for the brand. With fewer different knives being produced, and long gaps between runs, the excitement level goes way down. People have lots of time to explore other hobbies, (and their inner psyches apparently.) I have always appreciated the expression, “if it ain’t broke….”

I'm absolutely envious of your #35 collection! They're quite inspiring!

Those pictures remind me of a man of 35 years, who's constantly wrestling with his own selfish nature and relationship with God. He's developing gray hairs and things creak a little when he gets up off the ground. He feels like he's behind where he should be in life, but the unrelenting schedule of a 40+ hour a week working man doesn't let him catch up. He spends too much time worrying about things he can't change, and not enough time changing the things he should. He's very aware that time is passing too quickly and that his life has an expiration date. His son is growing up too fast and he knows one day his little buddy's going to venture off on his own which is causing him some anxiety.

But golly... those 35's... wow!

I sure like this one enough to carry it...

Almost every single day.

I think this pic is from back in April, but you can see it in the what knife/knives are you carrying today thread for it's current state...

(WARNING: link contains modern knife content!!!)

Got a few more pepper spots since it's a watch pocket knife for me and I sweat a good bit.

I believe you need to be reminded of the words of our good friend that had more passion in his one arm than most do in their entire body.

"GEC collecting is WAR."

RIP Ken and godspeed.
I was thinking about Kenny the other day. I miss that guy. Would have been a cool tribute to have a one arm opening blade on this years forum knife. Don’t think it would look as good as the clip though but who really cares?

I have suggested several times that the forum knife should be a one-arm blade. I would love for GEC to make more one-arm barlows.

It’s clearly going to be a 2 blade Barlow with a stainless secondary…embarrassing that I have to break it down for y’all.

Indeed. But the problem is, war is usually a pyrrhic victory for those who survive it....

I couldn't care less about the 'competition' aspect of knife collecting, it's the aesthetics & utility that matter.

I'd say the same thing, but there's a couple 93 ramsfoots.... ramsfeet? in my collection which I kinda like a little more knowing there's unfortunate souls who weren't as lucky.

I was going to wait for the Bocote and release my rosewood. But I got tired of waiting so I started carrying the rosewood. It's already starting to darken, and I'm liking it. Sometimes your first choice has been the correct one all along.

Same problem for me. I have a Bullet 73 on the way, but do I need a Bocote too? My Rosewood is whispering no.

This is how I feel. I love trying new knives, because the next pattern or combination might be that much better in the pocket, that much prettier or more elegant or more satisfying to carry, or that much more practical in its blade choice. I don’t think there’s a perfect knife, but there sure are some I like better than others. On the other hand there are hardly any I truly dislike either. So a new knife is always a great day.
