Lets talk GEC!

How great an idea ^

What blade shape would be most appropriate? I'm thinking a razor/one-arm for that time of night when you might not have the coordination for both hands.

I don't know. Those one- arms can still hurt you pretty quick if you're not careful. I'm thinking a big spear on an easy open frame, possibly with a secondary being a crown lifter.

Maybe... although, if you don't have the coordination to open the knife with the soft pull like that on a #15, maybe you shouldn't be opening it ;)

Both highly astute observations.

In an ideal world, how about a match strike long pull?

^^^^^^^ Those are so odd. I have no idea how I managed to stumble onto mine. I understand only 11 were made. Can anyone confirm that?

I asked Chris at GEC because this particular model isn't listed in the production totals, or rather, it was mis-listed, but that is my guess. She didn't remember any of these being made at all, but when I pointed out the possibility of them being mislabeled in the production totals, she said that was probably right and that 11 sounded like the correct number. rma100 also has said that there were 11 made and if anyone knows for sure, it's probably him.

There seems to be little visibility (at least that I can find) about what's slated up next at GEC? After the 38's is a big question mark for me. Anyone know? I've now got a store credit at one of our dealers, burning a hole in my knife purse... err... pocket  !

I also understand that there is a clip version as well, but I haven't seen any.
There were a few but I believe there were less of the razor version. At any rate, so far it is the only razor caplifter they've made so far and we have 2 of them!

Dare I say, ever made? By anyone? Just doesn't seem right to bury a cap lifter alongside a one-arm blade, talk about a major source of frustrations! Just kidding guys, great score and the micarta just adds to the exclusivity of this Crown Lifter.

I got mine by a stroke of luck really..... and a generous dealer of course.
It is possible to open the caplifter with one hand and the help of a table or something else firm. Not very convenient, but possible!

Somewhere out there are a few one handed folks who like to drink beer! :)

If I remember correctly (not always easy) I believe the #15 Clip Blade/Caplifter in Natural Canvas Micarta was 14 pieces. Both the Clip and One Armed Opener Caplifters were "parts knives", put together with leftover parts from several different production runs.

They have, as yet, not scheduled beyond the 38 John Chapman Knives. I would expect we should here something very soon.

Informal poll of sorts....

Do you prefer Tidioute or Northfield and why?

Personally, I usually favor Northfield because I like the long pulls. Of course, there's always a few exceptions. I really like acrylics but it seems they are mostly Tidioutes which makes the decision hard sometimes...

Thinking about it, my collection is overwhelmingly leaning towards the Tidioute.

I like to carry and use. I prefer drawn swedges, nail nicks and jigged bone.

The sheepsfoot is the only exception for me; I like the looks of it with cut swedges and a long pull.

In general, I prefer the simpler looks of the Tidioute line but I have an almost even mix of NF/TD/GEC (not including the FF line under GEC). For NFs, I sometimes like the long pulls on specific models but usually am not the greatest fan of lined and pinched bolsters, or polished blades. GEC for the 440C although I wish they didn't add lines to their bolsters most of the time. On some models, I almost wish they were just a stainless version of the Tidioutes. I guess that also depends on the handle material.
