Lets talk GEC!

Although I'm sure the mods won't do it because of brand promotion, it would be great to have this list and the half stop list made into a sticky..... things tend to get buried under the avalanche here, especially on threads like this that are over 100 pages long.

Both really great lists, guys. I know the membership appreciates the time and effort that went into them. Yes, we have to watch what we sticky and also how many stickies there are. It would be great if one of the BF dealer members, or maybe GEC themselves, would post and maintain the lists. That might be more appropriate. I'm sure you guys would give your ok for that.

By my rough measurement, the blade on my single blade #23 is 3.78125" from the end of the bolster to the tip

What is the sentiment from the moderator perspective on GEC having a manufacturer subforum? I know it's probably not really in the picture and wouldn't be under the Traditional subforum, but I think it'd be popular.

I hope they dont get a seperate forum.

~ becomes more fanboyesque for lack of better wording
~ Do all GEC related threads on anything including knives only get started in their own forum?
~ Any way you look at it, confusing

They are traditional and this forum is for traditional knives, seems right to me. Who wants to sort through double posts in 2 forums?

I'm probably considered a fanboy myself to some, so I'm not being negative with this comment at all: Don't you think GEC posts make up a bit of a lopsided percentage of posts here in the general traditional forum?

As I have been interested in this topic for some time I have tried to pay attention. I would say that all threads run their course on relevance an interest. GEC arguably makes the best traditional knife today. We cant make people post about other brands and everything has its own thread so to speak. This threads for chatting to keep new threads down, each pattern gets atleast one thread. Anyone can start threads about any other manufacturers and I have, they get the interest they deserve I guess. But to split it, whats gained? I try to make threads to talk about older knives and features and so do lots of others. The old stuff is just not as main stream and in my oppinion to much of a hastle to hunt down a good example. I like the mix of topics in this forum and while GEC is the flavor of the day, they are not alone in representation here.

I agree with rockgolfer, and I "joined" to say just that. After years of lurking Traditional subforum I really do like the mix of info and knowledge on all traditional knives. Segregating GEC from Traditional would only mean I'd miss out on GEC posts not in this subforum. Here you get to read and see all the good old style stuff in one place without having to pick and choose which "one" you want to be interested in.

Welcome, and thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

OK, folks, here it is - GEC knives and their closed lengths, sorted by size:

PythonDr, thank you for making this list! I hope that you don't mind, but I took the liberty of adding blade lengths to it. I only took measurements of the main blades. I also sorted the knives by pattern # first to make it easier to quickly find the knife in question.

A few things to note here..... These blades are hand ground so there can be slight differences in length, even with the exact same pattern and blade shape. I know because I measured multiple knives on some of the patterns that I have several of. Maybe this is why only closed length measurements are given By manufacturers.

On the double main blade knives (48, 54, 73, etc) and also on Moose variations, the lengths are the same.

For the most part, different blade shapes in the same pattern number are the same size. There are some exceptions though. One being the 38; the Farmer Jack, Grinling Whittler and Willamette Whittler (Northwoods made on the same frame) all have different blade lengths.

Although I'm sure the mods won't do it because of brand promotion, it would be great to have this list and the half stop list made into a sticky..... things tend to get buried under the avalanche here, especially on threads like this that are over 100 pages long.

Great work on the list guys. I'll have to take a look and add a few later today. As for this list and my half stop list getting buried, perhaps, after the GEC length list gets its own thread, we ask Jeff to modify the first post in this thread with links to both threads? That way it shouldn't be too hard to find them.

As for a separate forum for GEC, I like having all the traditional knives in one place if we can. Sure there are a lot of GEC threads but we have been consolidating them and we can self limit creating new threads when what we want to post is better added to an existing thread. For folks who want to discuss other brands and knives, it is on them to post what they want to talk about. I don't think anyone in this forum is opposed to talking about any brand of knives.

I'm with you absolutely on this. A brand based forum will inevitably descend into a kind of censorship, self or otherwise. You will no longer be able to tell it how it is from your own perspective. The Fanboyism aspect is almost certain to stifle rational enquiry, I know of other places where owners or mods make it their personal circus, with a corresponding cult of personality flavouring the entire proceedings.

Here, we get to enjoy a pool of knowledge, moderation and differing experiences where GEC knives can be easily compared to other brands for objective discussion. My thanks to those who have compiled the GEC lists, they are useful and not that difficult to locate here. Less stickies the better I think.

Well said, Trand.

If there seem to be dispproportionate number of threads focusing on GEC products, then that is simply a reflection of the fact that in the world of current-production tradtionals, GEC is doing an excellent job of tapping into what many of us want. Isn't that a good thing? Why should a particular maker be sent off to its own seperate corner just for being successful? As Trand said - "For folks who want to discuss other brands and knives, it is on them to post what they want to talk about. I don't think anyone in this forum is opposed to talking about any brand of knives."

I don't think this has been mentioned yet but for those who would like these threads to be stickies, another option is to subscribe to the threads. I've been subscribed to Trand's half stop thread for over a year. I get emails when the thread has new replies and I can easily visit the thread anytime through my profile.

Just another option.

Well, I talked to Chris at GEC and they're all ready to set up shop in their own forum! WooHoo! Just kidding.

I didn't realize how popular this idea would be!

I like Trands suggestion of asking Rockgolfer to link to the length and half stop lists. For a newbie, this thread is much easier to find.

That's the ticket Rick. Very easy to follow a thread that way.

Oh, and nugun55's comment was right on target too.

An abundance of "Stickies" takes up too much screen space, IMO.

There are more than enough stickies on our front page.

I'm not sure it's necessary to start a stickie or sub forum for G.E.C. This thread seems to always be near the top anyway! When it's not, then I suppose interest may be fading.......probably not happening anytime soon!:)
