Lets talk GEC!

This GEC 29 has become one of my top five EDC pocketknives. Anyone know if this is based on an old pattern from a defunct cutlery company or if Bill Howard (or maybe Charlie) designed this one? Great pattern, an improved Cattle Knife. OH

ive seen earlier versions of the pattern from Queen, but made during Bill's tenure. The GEC version is much more refined, almost perfected.

I don't know if it's based on any particular historic pattern, but I agree that it's a great knife. The #29 and this #09 Esquire are my most carried GECs.

black mamba black mamba Hi Jeff if my memory is correct you have the entire 53 collection I have a couple 53 questions
is there a reason why GEC has not made this pattern in awhile looks like 2013 was the last year and is the cattle baron the only 53 with a punch
thanks

Frank, the collection I have is all of the #5383xx Cuban Stockman knives, the ones with the muskrat clip main blade. There have been many other #53s with one and two blades, and even 3 and 4 blade knives with regular clip mains. The #5383xx knives were made in 2007, 2008 and 2011.

thanks Jiki I can't buy most GEC knives today and forgot they made the electrician knife it still doesn't feel like the older 53s
thanks Jeff I thought you had all the 53s you still have a great collection

I don't recall seeing this particular combination on a vintage knife. I'm guessing this was a GEC interpretation of some of the old designs.
Here is an old one I have that is somewhat similar, humpback with a punch, but a spey blade instead of the coping blade, and secondary blade is same end as the main.

I use mineral oil. Any mineral oil that comes from a pharmacy is food safe, but just because it’s mineral oil doesn’t always mean it’s food safe. Or so I’ve been told.
Yes not all mineral oils are food safe. Enerpac hydraulic oil is mineral oil ( or was when I still used rescue tools) deffo not for eating ....I recently saw an old sewing machine in an antique store which included a small jar of lubricant...something called whale oil...probably quite tasty...keep in mind Australia was still whaling up until 1978..😱 .Not including native title hunting of narwhals and such...Japan Greenland and of course good mother%$#er Russia still whale for commercial interest....sooo maybe whale oil is actually available somewhere....I'll report back with my flensings er i mean findings.
