Meako whale oil is worth quite a lot here, it's sperm whale oil and they are no longer (legally) hunted. It is the best oil ever for some applications, fabulously lightweight. Clock repairmen all have a secret stash, and rue the day it is no more as there simply is no replacement. Might be ideal for lubing a slipjoint?.I recently saw an old sewing machine in an antique store which included a small jar of lubricant...something called whale oil..
I won't buy me anything modern like that, but GEC is something different, classy. Also, never got any love for wharncliffe type, but GEC-made are beautiful, I like their lines and shapes.I feel like I’m the only person that isn’t a 47 fan.
Vipers!

I personally do like that shield very much, but... again? Shield of the year, I guess.![]()
I have big hands and like big knives that are both pokey and slicey. I have also always wanted a smooth natural bone GEC.The Viper is an …ok… pattern. It’s universally beloved and looks really sweet when the blade is open, but in actual use I find the tip is easily damaged and the knife doesn’t fit in my hand as well as I could wish. (But I have small hands.) I used to have a couple of Vipers and passed them along. I’m very happy that Mr. Howard is leaving my wallet intact on this run but I’ll drool at the beautiful cover combinations!
I see it as a slicing knife (with a poking function). As far as the thin tip, I never broke a tip ony modern offfice/utility knife with disposable blades, so wharncliffe should be fine. The Viper is an …ok… pattern. The difference is, a common xacto knife blade costs cents, but at least for me I was always acutely aware that my viper had an exceptionally fine, delicate point. I always found I wanted to lead with the point, and did slightly deform it at one point. I had to make a conscious effort to be careful when attacking a heavily taped box or plastic clamshell packaging, and to try to slice the edge rather than stab into it. So, not a pattern I personally love, but also not a bad knife by any means.I see it as a slicing knife (with a poking function). Agree 100%. "Hotdog" is a classic form. It’s the new hotdog shield.I’d actually rather have the hotdog, which I still contend only gets the hate that it does because of the name. It’s not actually meant to be a hotdog in the way the banana shield is meant to be a banana. It’s just a rounded bar-type shield. But I digress…
I like all of them. The only one that I know is a classic too but can't do anything about my dislike of it is Bomb shield. Corset is second place, mostly because I find it a bit vulgar. That badge shield hasn’t stopped me from buying a knife that I like otherwise, but I don’t like it. I think the crest or federal shield look so much better.
