Lets talk GEC!

The sad truth.

That's the problem with trends. There's nothing inherently valuable about a brand name - a cutlery outfit is only as good as the last knife to leave their production floor.

But get a bunch of goofballs together that confuse their own self worth with the brand-name possessions they've acquired and all bets are off.

I like quality traditional pocket knives. If GEC quits making them, I'll find an outfit that does. I'm agnostic as to brand name, country of origin, what people on social media think about it, etc.
I don’t disagree with any of that.

I like GEC because they produce a quality carbon traditional slip joint where few others do that at the price point.

I didn’t buy a farm and field and I won’t buy an urban Jack as they don’t interest me.
Some folks will buy ever cover of ever release just to have it (or sell it). To each his own I suppose, it’s just a pain when you genuinely want something and can’t get it!

I can say that the first traditional knife was a boker with red jigged bone, then as a lurker on bladeforums I saw the pictures of whiskey bone case,or jigged red bone and off to the online store I went, then the buzz about how case was not in the league of gec,so that put me on the hunt for gec and the rest is history.only problem was that many a folk were saying you could get a gec for 30 or so dollars more, unbeknownst to me these folks had access to dealer drops, the reality for me in canada was paying a 100 plus over case prices.thank God I can't afford customs, because gec is the last ladder I climb, and I'm good with that because it's all I need.

Probably thinking if you like a knife you buy it! 😂 Now if it’s got the name GEC folks don’t even want to see the knife before buying it!
I can't argue that, but I like when someone shows a certain pattern and they have every cover and blade configuration. Especially the sfo's those don't tend to hit the market and if they do I'm sure the cost is heavy.i see collectors and flippers as two separate entities

I remember those sitting in stock at dealers for what felt like years. What were we all thinking haha?

to be fair those 38 specials would probably still be easy to find on the secondary, they still don’t get much love. Personally I like mine, was my first foray into GECs. Followed quickly by a 48 bloodwood that was also sitting on shelves for quite a while.

I think they often blend together. It seems quite a few see flipping as a means to pay for some collections. I stopped really worrying about them though. Many people are flippers to a degree and have sold knives for more than they purchased for, I know I have. Some of the more egregious ones do get a bit annoying, but there’s not much to be done about em.

Your not wrong there, unfortunately the secondary market is all alot of us have.for the most part I don't mind if they add a bit to the cost,it's when they go 80+%over what they paid the day before.

Everyone who takes the time to join a forum to discuss Great Eastern Cutlery obviously has a passion for the knives. This leads to joy when you get one and sadness when you miss out. I am afraid this is just the way it goes for any product where the demand far exceeds the supply. However, constantly stressing over the situation is not healthy or productive. This thread is intended for knife discussion, not venting over the cost, availability, people’s motivations, etc., etc. I could never afford to get everything I want, and I am okay with that. In fact, it wouldn’t be special anymore if I got everything. I just enjoy the knives I have been fortunate enough to snag.

So, we are talking knives?

How about a large congress? A tobacco knife according to Mr. Levine. I have this beautiful S&M example gifted to me by OldSoul OldSoul . Sheep, spear, coping, and pen. The 61, 62, and 13 are all roughly the same size (3¾ inch). This guy comes in a 4 inches and is much more robust.

Great knife, it would be fantastic if it was a four blade with the four different blades!
4 for 24!

I'm still guessing 13 or 77.

I buy GEC for manufacturing quality, not a brand name... and some of them are very fancy like this user 38.

The entirety of my Farm & Field family!

A natural canvas Micarta 71 from the '18 run which has darkened to a very rich maroon color, a Blue Black Richlite 21 from the latest run that I picked up on a drop (and which has already accompanied me on a trip from Miami, FL to Dahlonega, GA), and a Natural Linen Micarta 21 (also from the latest release) which came to me via a steely-eyed porchman and regular contributor here (and hopefully new friend!) who recalled my desire to obtain one and, in true porch fashion, made my dream a reality! I love them all, but the Natural Linen Micarta feels special and won't be leaving my pocket for the foreseeable future - this one's already in the running for 2024 KotY!

Took off for Lowe's and some other errands this morning, realized I was knifeless. Stirred around in my car console and this little #14 popped up - right where I left it last time I carried it I suppose. This knife is what a peanut should be for my hands; short & handy, flat & easy to carry, while packing a great blade - with plenty enough horsepower for normal pocketknife chores. OH
