Lets talk GEC!

Thickness counts too. I've a few of the 2018 #56 Bird Dogs, all two-blade versions, and despite being just 3.5" (same as a #15) they feel hand-filling, comfortable and substantial for the size. Enter the 2023 version of the #56, a single-blade easy-open Dog Leg Jack, and I was surprised how the thinner girth makes the knife feel 'smaller' somehow.

There was a 3-blade, 3-spring version of the #56 released in 2011, called the Weaver Jack, which would be even thicker - never seen one, it must be a rare beast, but I'd sure like to get my hands on it!
I got a couple of the single-blade #56s from the last run, Jigged Natural Micarta and Orange Scramble Acrylic, and because of the perceived "smallness," it's taken me a while to warm up to the pattern.

Sometimes I like to coordinate my carry (y'all can laugh, I've got pretty thick skin... 🤣) and the arrival of my Natural Linen Micarta #21 Bull Buster is really what inspired me to go dig the #56 Jigged Natural Micarta out of the case. Now that I've been carrying it around for a bit, I find that I really love the lines and ergonomics - and while I wouldn't be opposed to it being a touch bigger, it certainly doesn't perform like a small knife.

Reading your comments about the multi-bladed #56 variants makes me hope that GEC decides to run this pattern again, in a multi-blade configuration, in the near future.

Here's an 86 that's floating around. Note the gawdy, garrish, uglier than sin, overdone, useless, engraved, stamped, scratched on, bolster? Just thought I point it out.

Oh Modoc ED Modoc ED , every time you call that one "garrish" I just want to break down and cry. 😭

Some folks would give up a finger or two for a bolster like that and I guess I'm one of 'em!

13's coming up

That certainly depends. I got the same 86 as Modoc ED Modoc ED just posted. Like his, mine is a user too and the stamp STAYS.
Prolly because it's Cyclops Steelworks ;)
I think the fact that every morning I have my coffee and 2 fruits probably doesn't help, then if I'm outside or downstairs doing something and forgetting to carry a bigger work knife, the white owl gets stuck, doing the 35 cattle or 86hj or buck 112 job.

The etch on gec knives don't stay very long, this is after a few months ,mind you I put this in my pocket when I get up.something about a stag white owl.View attachment 2470442
Loss of etch through use is a badge of honour, Sir. In the case of a minority of GEC's recent etches (e.g. the Bunny Knife) some might say it's an improvement too. As I daresay you know, etches were never intended to stay on a knife for long after purchase, often serving to differentiate one retailer's stock from another's, or even just to prove to a customer that a knife was as yet unsold/unused. Today, of course, degradation of the etch can exclude your knife from Safe Queen status - how dreadful!

The bocote wood looks nice, another wood is snake wood also cherry wood which I have zero of for the simple fact that I have to limit which rabbit holes I go down.i limit my handle materials too bone, ebony and cocobolo .but I have purchased one Bloodwood one desert ironwood one micarta and one hummingbird acrylic gec knives.cocobolo was a handle material that didn't grab me until I received the 78 dressed in it and became an instant fan.

I’ve got two ebony knives but when they’re black black it’s an unbeatable handle material in my book.

I really like the size and shape of the Urban. I like the fit and finish, the ESPL, the easy going but still snappy action, the blade shape, the way the closed comb and long pull look next to each other. It's better than expected! It's got a pleasant heft and seriousness to it.

I also purchased it 3 hours after it hit the site.
