Lets talk GEC!

The spear is plenty useful,

It depends what for, I take my pocket knives to work. Only took a couple days of carrying a spear to never want to take one again. Nothing it can do a knife with a point can’t do better!

I like the symmetry of the spear blade. It’s good for starting a hole (carefully.)

I also like clips because that sharp point can come in handy sometimes. Most knives (but not all!) look better with a clip. But a spear is more traditional.

To me it’s a coin toss. Especially when you toss in the fact that I like and usually have a secondary that adds versatility to the knife.

This is why the 81 Moose pattern is so perfect, one spear and one clip - both full sized!

The 81 Boss Bull Keeper is admittedly pretty close to the moose, so shares the same versatility.

Think I've seen a pic or two of the Red Linen Micarta 81. Looks a bit disappointingly bright to my eye or?
I think it's just the pics, my example is properly "speckled", like I've already had my greasy paws all over it even though it's still in the tube. It also possesses the best f&f I've ever seen on a GEC, bar none. It's mechanically perfect, and I don't say that lightly. 😮

Especially breaking off that delicate point, clip points *are* way better at that... And having the tip wander under hard use because so much metal has been removed from the spine. The clip point was developed especially for stabbing, one thing I rarely do with a traditional folder. Nobody here's gonna end up in the Sandbar fight and survive only because of the clip point on their GEC. *steps off soapbox*.

You say it like if original Bowie knife had a clip point.

I believe, clip blade on a pocket knife is designed for delicate tasks where a narrower tip is required, for example to reach somewhere without making a bigger hole, like skinning smaller animals with more precision. Trapper pattern comes to mind.

Here’s mine. I would describe it as bright red but not as bright as the pics I posted recently. Those were in bright harsh light, I’m a terrible photographer. This pic shows it’s truer color to my eyes. I do like it and I assume it will get darker with age.

My specific example is a little pinkish. I was thinking they’d be more true-red or maybe even maroon. I don’t hate it, I’m just hoping some pocket wear and use will darken it up over time.

This picture is pretty accurate to how mine looks in person.

Got this red linen in today. I love a square bolster stockman, so I knew I’d like this (that, and I already have an 81 Bull Moose from a few year back that I like a lot).

I guess I hadn’t seen any pictures yet of the “FOR FLESH ONLY” etch on the spey blade, so that was a nice little surprise. I think it’s a nice touch, reminiscent of the spey blade etches on some old stockman knives.

Will Power Will Power the red Micarta is definitely a lighter color than previous GEC red micartas. I don’t have a lot, but here are a couple for comparison. I thought the 86, which is from last year, was too light, and this is even lighter. The Bull Nose on the far right might be called “maroon” rather than red, I don’t remember off the top of my head.
