Lets talk GEC!

It’s hot where I live. Luckily it’s a dry heat but doesn’t help the sweat factor. 105 today 👏
My buddy was out hunting a few years ago and found a 30/30 in an old canvas sack leaning against a split in a tree,it was tied up with a strip of moose hide, the gun was from the 20's,he figures from studying the bag and gun which he still uses were put there by a hunter who forgot were he put it,it could of been there at least 80 years because the gun seemed new at time of loss, but amazing how it was preserved after so many winters and summers, the fact that it was in thick bush kept the sun off it.thats why I encourage people to sell their knives north of border.

hows the humidity on 1095 down there, i know we got a few folks in florida and boy nothing beats the one time someone shared a picture of their gec and the spine was all patinaed from sitting in the pocket

I find 1095 to be quite reactive in South Florida's heat and humidity but seldom in a damaging or destructive way - provided the user does their part keeping their blade relatively clean, dry (as much as is possible) and lubricated with zeal.

Patinas form fast here and that's a good thing because a well-oiled patinated finish is one the best working finishes I've found for preventing red rust. For instance, I have a CPM Cru-Wear knife with a DLC finish and, because I don't keep the blade oiled like I would a 1095 blade, I often find rust spots just on the uncoated edge (where an adequate patina for rust resistance would never develop). I worry most about carrying 1095 when it hasn't had a chance to form a patina. That's when I've found 1095 to be in real peril of red rust.

It might be too much for some, but my ritual looks like: Cut something -> Rinse if water is available, wipe off if not -> rub something oily on the blade. For the last step I've used everything from nose grease to rendered pork fat and lots in between. I prefer mineral oil if I have the choice. Mobil 1 synthetic works well too, and is non-toxic, but I don't enjoy the flavor it adds to food. 😂

An anecdote: A buddy of mine destroyed a Yellow Delrin Case Trapper by leaving it outside in a bucket of water. It may have happened faster here for the extreme temps, but the results of that abuse would most likely occur anywhere between the poles. At the poles, I imagine the water would freeze before much rust could form 🤔 - but that's no concern of mine! 🤣

I hope that gives some insight into the exciting world of traditional knife ownership in equatorial-ish tropical climates.

Next time: How does all the saltwater surrounding this peninsula factor into the equation?! Stay tuned!! 😱

My most carried GEC and its patina. She doesn't seem nervous. I'm not either. The revolver is stainless.

At this point I am beginning to wonder if rifle on the riddle pic is for another Remington knife and not the gunstock pattern? 🤔

Pretty sure there's at least an SFO 81 being made right now anyway.
The tail end of the model number peaking out the door sure seems to say that an SFO or two is in the works. Anybody interested in a kidney, I have a spare? Have we ever figured out what the 5 "next cool" knives on the line meant? We've had most of them, and it still doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

I figured it was just a reference to a new pattern, probably still up from the 32’s.

They’ve had the lamb/sheep photos up for so long I’m assuming at this point the sheep is dead and they must be doing a sheep bone handled knife.
