This would have been back in the 1960s, and I'm sure we didn't spray them in our small-scale dairy operation. My recollection is we'd just try to pull them up by hand, and go back with a spade for uncooperative onions.

You can smell the onions when grinding hamburger also. I've smelled it strongly during my meat cutting days, but I don't know how much it affects the taste.
And then their are road apples ( you see these a lot in Amish country.)Hedge apple and horse apple are the same thing. Just different name from different parts of the country. Fruit of the Osage Orange tree![]()
