This would have been back in the 1960s, and I'm sure we didn't spray them in our small-scale dairy operation. My recollection is we'd just try to pull them up by hand, and go back with a spade for uncooperative onions.

You can smell the onions when grinding hamburger also. I've smelled it strongly during my meat cutting days, but I don't know how much it affects the taste.

Hedge apple and horse apple are the same thing. Just different name from different parts of the country. Fruit of the Osage Orange tree 👍🤠
And then their are road apples ( you see these a lot in Amish country.)😊
