Lets talk GEC!

Has GEC always done these SFO only runs like this and the recent 85s?

Occasionally, yes. Make sure to watch the 'what's happening' section because they've been known to sneak in a short run of their own as well.

The Tidioute Navy Knife is a recent example.....

Does anyone see anything fishy about this knife:

I'm pretty surprised about the hotdog shield on a Northfield. I wonder if someone made a mistake at the factory.

Also, on a related note, it's a little disappointing to me that so many Northfields are being made with satin finished blades lately. Part of the appeal of the Northfield brand is all that shiny steel to match with the fancy bolsters, etc.

Besides the hotdog shield, that clip blade would look so much nicer with a swedge that starts at the clip, and a long pull behind it.

Agreed! I prefer the polished blades. All these satin blade Northfields lately are detracting from the brand distinctions.

To be fair though, that model is only a couple dollars more than the Tidioute version.

I fully agree, but they probably had to bring the swedge back that far to allow for clearance between the secondaries.
But regardless, that is one stunning knife! I hope they come out with this many variations of the upcoming forum knife pattern once it is produced.

These #98's are a curious lot all around. The shields are what really get me though. They just kind of look like an afterthought, going in every which direction?? I really like the large, centered shield on the Camp knife SFO, but then they go and shift it forward on the whittler and cattle knives? The Northfield and Tidioutes are a complete scramble; hotdogs, NACB's, clouds, Tidioute? Just seems to me that a large, symmetrical equal end should have a symmetrical, centered shield. A simple bar shield would have worked for me. Can anyone offer any enlightenment?

I can't enlighten you, but will completely agree. I think it's a great knife that could of been better by using a larger centralized shield.

A Tidioute version of the camp knife with red micarta and a centered hotdog shield would have been a knockout.

It does seem a little weird that the big shield on the SFO whittlers was shifted over, and I agree that the hotdog on the kingwood Northfield must have been a mistake.

For the most part tho, I'm loving the 98s!

Maybe it has to do with the tooling to centre the shield on a knife this big...

I gotta say that quirks are sometimes good, but consistency is nice too - having certain shields for Tidioute and some for Northfield makes sense - otherwise GEC may as well dispense with the brand differentiation system the different shields are helping to represent.

Right! The more I look at that swedge & pull the more ugly and out of place it looks And I agree that Northfields are better with a crocus finish.

If I remember correctly, the Northfield 38 whittlers didn't have long pulls either. Maybe the crescent nail nick is a "whittler thing".

If there's no SFO's on the 15's why is it they haven't released specific cover information. Seem's like that should be sorted out by now because they will be up for production any day now.

The 72's information is available and they won't be out for almost half a year... I don't know what to reserve if they don't post the 15 covers, sigh.

My guess, and it's only that, is that the 15 run will be large enough that one should be able to get the knife or knives he or she wants without worrying about a reservation.

Supposed to be quantity 3000.

There's worse things to worry about, but it's a bit frustrating because I'd like to sort out my knife budget...

Anyway, you're right, it doesn't really matter... I will just hold off.

This is becoming a constant gripe, page after page it seems. Cbr, have you given a call to Chris at GEC and asked? I'm sure she'd be able to help you out if they know what covers they're going with. If they don't know exactly what they're going with yet, she'll tell you that also.

They don't know exactly what covers they're going with yet. That's why it hasn't been announced. These are still at least a month or more out with the Beer Scouts being maybe 3 or 4 months. None of these have been listed on any Production Schedule.

I don't want to take her time for this. I will just let everything play out and see what happens.

Pretty much what it comes down to is I've been eyeing something else that will take my #15 funds. If the jigged bone is red, and the wood is osage, I can move forward with something else because those are not my preferences. If the jigged bone is unicorn horn, and the wood is 10,000 year bog then I want duplicates...

Well, who knows... I was guessing they would start milling the covers for the #15 very soon. They just posted the most recent production schedule, but everything on the schedule is already in the works or completely done.

Maybe they will do the #14 first because it seems to be mostly sorted out, and that's why there's no word on the #15 covers.

I'm having a custom from Davison made with 3400 year old Bog Oak...it should turn out pretty nice. I couldn't find unicorn horn or bone anywhere! Lol.

You could always have a modder put different scales on any Beer Scout you could get, that way it ends up exactly how you want it. Might add $50 to the cost but then it'll be something unique to you.

Please post your knife when you get it, I'd like to see it!

The 57 whittlers also have the nail nick inside the cut swedge. It very well may be a 'whittler thing'. At any rate, I prefer long pulls on Northfields, but whatcha gonna do?! I guess don't buy it if it doesn't suit your fancy.
