Lets talk GEC!

Yeah I just went back to my favorite knife seller's blog and in May he said this: "Everyone’s been hounding me about the 15 Boy’s knife series and all I can say is they are coming. I know there’s a number of SFO’s that have to squeezed in and no doubt it’s going to take some time for all of the 15’s to get run. I’m still taking reservations on them and have most options still available.

Just received an update on the 15’s and it appears their production has been pushed back to ‘around’ October, 2016."

and in June he had this to say:

"Got a note from Chris this afternoon and they’ve settled on the wood, bone, micarta, acrylic colors for both the Boys Knives and the Beer Scouts. Here ya go!

#15 Beer Scout
Golden Ale Jig Bone
Maroon Micarta
Draft Beer Acrylic
Beer Barrel Oak

#15 Boys Knife

Antique Yellow Jig Bone
Gabon Ebony
OD Green Linen Micarta
Nifebrite Acrylic"

I called Chris awhile back and asked about the STL labelled knives and I swear she said they were something like 416 stainless. That sounds right. She said it was a rather mild stainless and would slowly patina over time. Then again I've been wrong before.

Jack, those smooth ivories are looking great!

According to what Bill Howard told me awhile back, the Steel used on the Bolsters and Liners of the all steel GEC knives is Low Carbon Steel. Also generically known as Mild Steel. I'm not a Metallurgist, but I think all steel contains some level of Carbon.

GEC is starting to become the "all #14 all the time". Like the Bee Gees or Michael Jackson in the early 80s. Nice knives but I will be glad when they move on to another pattern. More stainless please!

Great idea for a thread, all things GEC. My comment would be that I just cant keep up financially. They keep coming out with fantastic patterns faster than I can buy them all. I have an affinity for shields on traditionals, the right shield really classes up a knife for me. I wish GEC would use a bigger variety, ie. federal, bomb, etc. that would be my only shtick.

I haven't even thought about shields until you brought it up, but now that you mention it it's definitely something I'd be into!

I think this is part of their new strategy to keep up with demand. I'm sure they'll keep doing the occasional short run but I think we're seeing the new norm. They have a very small factory and a huge pool of buyers. They will have to spend a lot of time cranking out the same knife for each new pattern to keep up. After this I think they have a few SFOs lined up and then they're going to just crank out Beer Scouts for awhile. People have been getting a bit crazy over not getting the knife they wanted do to low production numbers.

I've had the same feelings recently. As much as I love GEC, I am way too saturated with the images of barlows and other popular patterns. But hey, there's always options right! :)

I couldn't stand the temptation of these beauties anymore, first time I ordered two knives of the same model with the scales as only difference. Going down the rabbit hole [emoji33]
I sense there is great wisdom in you young padawan:thumbup:

Not enough.. Too many... lol

Haha. The internet is the wrong place to look for consensus. :D

There's probably some middle ground between a run of 100 knives without SFOs (#15 440C boy's knives) and full production runs with multiple SFOs (#14 Lick Creek boy's knives). The differences among the SFOs is the covers material and at least a couple are very similar to others. Shields would have differentiated the SFOs a bit more. It probably would have increased the prices but I think it would have been very successful.

I agree. Some old boy's knives had shields and others didn't so I think either is traditional for the #14 pattern. But it would be neat to have some #14 runs with well chosen classic shields. I'd definitely like to see more classic shields on other patterns instead of their standard Tidioute/UNXLD/hotdog/cloud shields.
