Lets talk GEC!

Got ahold of me the yellow wood 2blade version..., nice fit for me.., although I do love a 15.
Here's a pic...

If you take a look at one of the dedicated whittler threads there are images there :)

Well did I get lucky Paul. I was talking to the dealer I have a knife reserved with and I mentioned that I really wanted to get a whittler made by Bill Howard. He kinda chuckled a little then said. Well I just happen to be looking at one right now sitting on my desk. It was a grinling whittler. I have been hunting the dealership's and the forum's for month's with no luck at all. This is a great find for me. :D

Nice yellow wood

Does anyone know if there will be sfos on the upcoming 15 boys knife with the caplifter?

That yellow wood is a real stunner!

I don't know for sure, but I think I remember reading that there will be no SFOs on the beer scouts/boy's knives, which is a bummer since I thought CKs "soda scouts" were the standouts on the last run.

14 "scouts" would be cool too, as others have already stated.

thanks kite

I agree that a 14 scout would be awesome. Really liking the size it makes the 15 feel huge by comparison and the 77 feel like a blunt object I could throw at someone to incapacitate with all that mass.

I actually EDC a soda scout and a 98 cattle knife usually so I'm used to sagging pocket syndrome!

I am really loving my 14 barlow but need something a little more versatile for my everyday farm chores. Also, I sure would hate to lose that little barlow, it's pretty much irreplaceable after all.

My 14 arrived today. Very cool little knife. Is love to see a run of two blade 14 barlows with either a clip or spear and a wharnie. Would be cool if they made more than 20 of them too, so I could get one.

I feel ya, I find myself torn sometimes between wanting some GECs to be easier to get, and wanting my own collection to be composed of hard-to-get knives.

I think there will be a lot of great 14s in the future, clip blades will probably happen next year, that's my official Prediction. I would love to see some 14s with bails and traditional "overall chains" to keep those knives secured! :)

Anybody know how long GEC knife-bright covers will retain the ability to glow?

I'm guessing, depending on conditions, they slowly loose brightness and will eventually lose the ability to glow?

Are there people that like brass liners and nickel silver bolsters and if so I was curious why. I noticed I very strongly prefer all steel knives for the durability since nickel silver scratches when you look at it wrong and the way they age and tarnish. I also like the clean look and feel like the brass detracts from the look of the knife.

My one knife with nickel silver and brass is the 15 clip stainless and I keep thinking how much nicer it would have been with all steel. I had to buy one though since I was on the hunt for a single clip and stainless was a bonus.

I realize that's only my opinion....anyone else got one?

The economics of slipjoint production tends to do this. Guys like knives and want to get a few, they see some pattern and handle combination and think "wow, I'd love to have one like that..." But if it was only produced as a run of 25, or even 75... That's easier said than done. When they eventually track one down, it's too pretty and rare to get all scratched up and patinated, and there's that niggling little voice saying "this knife is worth $, you had to shell out money for it, and it'll be difficult or impossible or really expensive to get another one like it if something happens, maybe you should hold onto it and enjoy it, but use something less hard to find, to cut your midmorning fruit and open your mail."

Ahh, the dilemma!

I prefer NS bolsters to mild steel, because they don't patina. I like the contrast between a well-patinated blade and the shiny, ever so slightly golden and warm-hued, bolster. They do scratch, but if you really use a knife the whole thing will have honest wear after a while, so I view it as part of the charm.

I do prefer NS or stainless steel for the springs and liners, but that's not too common, so I am happy with brass or steel liners, whichever. Brass has a slight functional advantage because it's easy enough to dry off a carbon steel blade, but if the knife gets wet it's harder to get all the moisture out of the liners and they can start to rust. Brass can impart a greenish color to scales, but it doesn't impair the function of the knife like rust does.

I could see the nickel silver if its in the liners, bolsters and pins. Your right that it looks good once its all scratched up.

I think its mainly the brass that bothers me, it just looks off to me.

I used to feel like you but now some I like nickel silver more. Some I do like all steel and have many all steel traditional patterns. There's even a run of 77 NF Barlows with nickel liners. Nickel silver bolsters aren't hard to maintain at all, and a shine is easily restored. Steel bolsters, specifically 1095 bolsters can and will rust if not maintained properly. And that isn't so easily restored as nickel is. I am a huge fan of brass, and love a competitors particular example of brass bolsters on a barlow pattern. It's great having so many choices within GEC and with other brands as well.
