Lets talk GEC!

Picked up a couple GEC's I've been lusting over for awhile. Both were a surprise, GEC recently was cleaning up it's 92 bin and found enough parts to make 15 more J.B.F. Champlin SFO's, I was lucky enough to snatch one, what a beautiful knife.

The other is the 38 Grinling Whittler, wife and I were walking around downtown Frederick MD and went into a nice knife shop, mainly modern but did have a nice display of Case and Buck knives. Looked in one glass case and saw several GEC's and one was the Grinling in ebony. I had missed out on these so I snatched one up, they are such a graceful knife.

Lucky D: I must say I'm jealous xD I've been looking for one of those 92 sfo's by GEC/Loscico/JBF for forever now. That's a beaut for sure.

These are both amazing!

Wowza, I had on idea such a thing was even possible. Great surprises, both. I'm partial to the ebony Grinling, a "best of" from GEC for sure.

Congrats.

I agree with the posts above on QC and I don't think it should be a dealer responsibility - it's a GEC responsibility.

I agree. The new stuff seems great in my limited sampling - I think if you have one of each model even if you have 200 knives, that's limited. The only one I have been shocked at defects that got let out of production by GEC was circa 2011. My perception is that the new stuff is pretty damn good and a bargain. I love GEC.

Yeah, I think it is just bad luck for me.

I was looking at the blade of the upcoming #35 and it struck me that one of GECs best features are its blade grinds. They are fantastic. Nothing else I know of comes close to the technical expertise and beauty. I had a look for a Remington scout knife with a blade profile that matches the one posted here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-Details-for-the-2016-Bladeforums-knife/page6 , but they seem to have abandoned that nice profile fairly quickly and dropped the swedge. I think this spear blade will be an absolute win. This is one of the strengths of GEC that keeps me buying them.

Anyone want to take a guess at what blade configurations GEC will throw on the new #35 whenever it makes its appearance this year?
My guess / hope would be a scout, iirc I read something about Bill's intention to produce a scout on this pattern in a forum knife discussion thread [emoji41]

Thank you all, Sarah the Grinling is such a graceful knife, something about the lines.

Question about my #15 in Old Barn Chestnut. The wood doesn't seem to be stabilised at all. I've been oiling it to try and keep it seasoned, does anyone have any better ideas? Living in 90+ heat and washing the knife up after eating food, if I'm not careful the wood will dry out and start to flake.

Maybe try wax?

The wood covers should not flake. I have kitchen knives that are older than me and the covers haven't flaked despite being run through the dishwasher regularly. But they can warp if they get wet. The best way to keep that from happening is to buy a knife that doesn't have wood covers or avoid getting the knife wet. ;) r8shell's suggestion is a good one. Wax will repell water. Wax will wear off but it will provide some temporary protection.

Dry wood has some antimicrobial properties according to an article posted by Bernard Levine. Those properties are diminished by oil and wax. So dry wood covers are healthier and oiled/waxed wood covers are prettier.

You can just use a common paste wax or even neutral shoe polish (carnauba wax). There are also some commercial products that are a bit costlier like Renaissance Wax.

Don't get my hopes up like that!!! I've been praying for a GEC standard scout/camp knife pattern since 2008.

Please don't get your hopes for a scout knife up to high! I'm not sure what and where I read about plans for a scout knife. All I was able to find until now are two posts by Charlie hinting for a future scout in the "A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!" thread:

[...]

We can however do a one-blade or two-blade knife, and possibly bring in a new pattern, ironically, the one that would form the basis of a future scout, a 3 3/4" Equal ender! That is if we wish. Otherwise, we can possibly make it on the #15 frame, or whatever they have in the schedule this year. I suggested a single-spring knife, and Bill said yes he could do that. Maybe we could do an abbreviated scout, with a utility blade at one end (a Radio-Scout? - 0r??). If anyone has an older knife with those blades, please post a pic, or send me one!

So, is this path making sense to you my friends? Please comment, suggest, criticize (keep it positive if you don't mind!) and send in/post pics of anything interesting! I await your feedback!!

I hope some year we do a Lambfoot! That blade is more versatile than a sheep foot IMO.

BTW, Bill has a lot of work done on the 3 3/4" EE (future scout). We have an opportunity to have the "Triple P" version, if we choose!

GEC had a lot of issues building the Texas Camp Knife due to it's complex construction and the resulting learning curve required by employees during production. In short, it was a PITA for Bill and I doubt we will see a four blade scout on the 35 frame. A three blade stockman and/or camp knife are both good possibilities though, I think. Perhaps a whittler and standard double end jack are in the mix as well, but the only thing for sure is the BF knife at this point. Things can, and do change quickly at GEC so who can tell?

I don't think a bail will happen, personally. Sorry Meako. ;)

That is interesting Barry. I love my scout knives and now have an even greater appreciation for what it took to make them.

Well, that's just disappointing to hear Barry. GEC did such a magnificent job with the Texas Camp knife and Cattle and Whittlers. A smaller version of these would just be incredibly amazing!

I asked GEC on Instagram about the wood and was told it is stabilized.
