Lets talk GEC!

I have to agree the release of these 74s was kind of a mess... I gave up my spot for a Heartland jigged bone because the jigging wasn't what it said it was going to be and the color was frankly kind of ugly in my opinion. Kind of a shame and a lot of misinformation. I think the star of this run was the Autumn leaf sfo... I really like my ebony heartland and orange camel bone sfo too. The green is beautiful as well. I'm extremely disappointed in the bone covered Heartland.

I seem to recall the #47 vipers having frustrating release issues of a similar kind.

I think you're right... for me it started with the mixed up Heartland early reserve and then just kind of kept snowballing... it really seems like the communication between all parties was really poor. And here we are at the end of this 74 and no jigged Northfields? Kind of strange all around. Oh well, not the end of the world by any means... I got a couple awesome 74s out of this. Hope everyone else that wanted one did too. I'm just glad all runs don't go like this one lol.:p

I had thought, when I read the production schedule when these #74's were first announced, that I was going to get a bit of a knife buying break, because they just didn't sound all that interesting to me. Then I saw Rob's Ebony SFO and I really liked it, but completely missed the boat on getting one. Personally, I think his jigged bone SFO looks great, too, although I don't expect to be able to get my hands on one of those, either.

I did end up ordering the standard Tidioute Ebony version, which I think looks just as good as Rob's SFO in every way except for the shield (I really like that corset shield). The lined bolsters I could take or leave, and more often than not I prefer the more subtle swedges on Tidioutes to the more pronounced Northfield swedges. Cocobolo was out for me because I don't like the cloud shield, and I'm not a big fan of that green.

I was curious what the Northfield jigged bone was going to look like, and it does seem to be a bit of a mystery. Who knows what happened there.

I doubt that I'll be in on the #38 Specials; that clip blade on that pattern looks a bit odd to me. What I'm really looking forward to next are the #13's, particularly the Speaker Jack.

Thinking about using my DKT points on the The camel bone 74 . This will be my first GEC that I buy new . I'm new to GEC so my question is are these like Spyderco sprint . Is this knife worth getting or is there other ones out ther . Single blade I have a Used double blade and I'm not a fan of it . Thanks

I am not familiar with Spyderco . Yes , I believe the 74 is worth getting. Yes , there are others out there such as the 72's and 73's which are both very similar in size and shape , but there are not many of them to choose from. I would suggest that you go to Greateasterncutlery.net and go through their dealers and look at their individual inventory if you want to see what may be available. I believe GEC makes a very good knife and good luck finding what you would like .

The GEC SFOs are like a Spyderco sprint but with way lower numbers. Pretty well all the GEC knives have a way shorter run that Spyderco.

Your best best on finding a knife you like is to lurk around here a lot, and the slipjoints section in the for sale area. You'll start to see shapes and models and handle materials you like.

You can dive in too and order new. It seems they resell very quick in most cases. The 74 is a nice looking knife.

Have they confirmed that they didn't or won't do any Northfield jigged bone stallions? I know there are no pictures of it, and they're working on the 71s. It's listed as one of the knives in the "just finished" section, though. Mike? Barry?

Things like this come up often in a factory that does "just in time" sourcing. My guess is that the bone wasn't completely ready so they put their workforce on something else until it was. It will probably show up in a few days.

I think the only alternative to some information being incorrect in the end from time to time, is no information at all ahead of time. Possibly if all dealers and sfo contractors would just go silent until the product is in-hand; we could avoid these scenarios where pre-production information doesn't pan out. But I think most people that deal with small factories, builders, contractors, etc. realize that things change for one reason or another.

The DLT 74 camel bone run is more like a Spyderco exclusive in which a production run is done for a specific retailer at that company's request and can only be purchased from that retailer, although, as mentioned, in much smaller production numbers. If you see a model you like, best to grab one while you can because there's no way to know when or if it'll be made again. I'm pretty new to GEC knives, but it's safe to say I'm hooked. I really like the 74s; totally worth getting one if you like a single blade and are ok with not having a lock.

I'm undecided on the Mugbugs. On the one hand, I like both back lock sodbusters and micarta scales a lot. On the other hand, I don't usually like knives that big and I missed the pre-order so I probably shouldn't get my hopes up. On the other OTHER hand, my OD Cody Scout may need a big brother. :D Eh, I added myself to the mailing list for notification just in case.

Kinda relieved I'm not tempted by the #13 congress or the #38 Special. GEC releases are like a roller coaster ride. I need to catch my breath! :o:)

Thanks, Mike, for the update. I'm now even more curious what they'll look like than I was before.

And I don't think any GEC fans want that to happen... part of the fun of GEC is the anticipation of upcoming releases. Of course when these kind of changes happen, people on the consumer side of things will question why. Overall, the 74s have been very nice IMHO... still hoping/excited to see a Northfield jigged version.

After all this discussion and input, I agree with this last wrap by willy. Folks get excited, make decisions, things change, then we're disappointed but I don't hear anybody really pissed. The final products came out nice. I think the one exception is the misinformation on the jigged bone on the Heartland SFO. That was not a good outcome IMO.

I totally agree with you and Willythekid Alan . The way Mike and DLT have run their SFO's is one of the major reasons why I have gotten into GEC's . I would not like to see them change the way they do it . We win some and we lose some but we get to play the game. The choices we had this time around were exceptionally large and there were many very nice choices . Congrats to all the persons who ended up with the Heartlands also . Please post them .

"misinformation" has a bad feel to it. I think "incorrect" information is a better word. There was no deliberately false information. It simply didn't come out looking as one would anticipate; which is a very common occurrence.

Thanks for your input Mike . I really appreciate it and I am sure the other guys do too .

Got an email from CK, I guess all the bone Heartlands have been claimed--I guess signing up for it in under 5-seconds just wasn't fast enough. Oh well, I've been eyeing a Mnandi. Plus I already have a reserve on a Yellow Rose Mustang, which looks like it'll be available soon.

Same thing happened to me - swore I entered the "Sure" within seconds of opening. I'll miss the SFO.

Consolation prize will be a Kizer Feist.

Mike. I will grant you, you're right. Bad choice of words on my part. Incorrect is more like it. It was an honest mistake.

I want to apologize to Mike as well as I used the word "misinformation" as well... at no point did I mean to imply that someone was deliberately spreading false information. I also want to make it clear I am very happy with the way the 74s came out with the exception of the jigged Heartland... really, really beautiful knives. I love the way GEC does business even if it means you might miss out on knife here and there. I just think it's a valid talking point when someone signs up for one thing but gets another with no heads up to the change.

Beautiful camel bone on that one... although, I'm not sure I've seen one I don't like yet. I love mine, almost as much as the Autumn Leaf! I have 3 74s from this run and everyone has awesome fit and finish.

So true and that's what made it so hard to choose . I wanted them all because they all had characteristics that I liked with there own personality sorta speak . Big props to DLT for there great pictures for each individual knife and there as usual lightning fast shipping . That's part of what made the buying experience that much more fun picking out your own . But wow the night I bought mine they were disappearing fast lol I'd have one picked out then throw it in my cart and if I hesitated it was gone . I think it was a blessing in disguise though because I'm so happy with the one I ended up with [emoji106]
