Lets talk GEC!

Anyone have any of the GEC 22s with the clip main and pen secondary? Saw a few of them on sale sites and was curious about how they felt in the hand.

I loved mine. Changed the pen to a coping. Stupidly sold it. Would love to know where they're for sale currently, if you could send me an email.

I actually haven't seen them in stock unfortunately just the ad copy. If you can do you remember how the clip was compared to the newer 74 stallion profile? Specifically the height of the clip at the broadest part of the blade?

Had a question and didn't want to start a new thread about it...

I've just started to get bit by the traditional bug about a year ago so I'm still not up to speed on some of this stuff.

My question is...

I know that a lot of GEC patterns are extremely hard to find other than on the secondary market once the initial runs sell out. But it seems like almost all of the distributors have the exact same GEC knives new in stock. Are these patterns (or certain versions of) just not very sought after ones?

For example I see almost every distributor has various new #14's, John Chapman's, #15 Navy's, and #18 beagles etc in stock.

Just curious!

I don't know about the other patterns you mentioned but I remember reading that the #14 Boy's Knives were a very large run. The folks at GEC wanted to do something a little different and make sure that everybody that wanted one had a chance to get one. I suppose they overestimated a little which was probably inevitable.

The 2016 production totals should be released before long. It will be interesting to see just how many of each variant were made.

When I first started hanging out here on the porch and cruising the GEC Dealership websites 2 years ago or so there was a similar situation except with different patterns. I can't find any of those patterns avaliable today. Like I think someone said earlier these knives that are just sitting will eventually be gone into collections or people's EDC rotation as well. :D

My expeience with the above:

I've only been in this game since late 2013, but the knives that were plentifully in stock when I started and seemed to show no movement were the #16 little Indian girl canoe, now they go for around 2 bills. Various 53 stockman versions and Congress versions, 61square end Congress, both of these still haven't seen the price appreciation as other patterns, but they are not weighing down shelves at the dealer's anymore. #62 maverick, was available and has seen a most recent love from us nuts. The 81 coonskinner seemed to be readily available. Heck red River acrylic 81 stockman was Available at one dealer for a year. All these patterns are pretty sought after now.

What patterns are not the most popular right now will inevitably become users or collectors if GEC historical availability repeats itself.

Exactly! I can definitely see a day when people will be kicking there buts for not buying a #14 boy's knife in there favorite cover before they all dried up. Same with the #74 stallion or Mustang. I remember The #71 Sod busters were rarer then Hens teeth just a few short month's back.
Lol I got a knife in the mail heading my way . Four more on reserve and I think I just talked myself into buying 2 or 3 more ;)

I could see that. The 14 TC in black cherry sawcut with the wane edge (or whatever it was called) covers...

Can anyone with a #48 improved trapper tell me how comfortable it is to use the muskrat blade? Based on the pictures I've seen, the whanrcliffe seems to sit very high when closed and I'm worried it might make using the muskrat unconfortable.

The #15 FarmBoy was one of those knives when I started getting into GEC (around mid-2015). They were produced in 2013, so by then they had been on dealers shelves for at least a year an a half, maybe even two years plus (not sure when in 2013 they were made). At the time I bought my Antique Yellow FarmBoy (Oct. '15) I believe all of the handle materials were available. I did end up with a Rust Red as well, but I'm kicking myself now for not picking up an Ebony or Nifebrite.

For me, it it isn't too bad unless you REALLY squeeze down on your grip. The wharnie kinda fits into the folds of my fingers. Using the wharncliffe, the muskrat clip just disappears into the handle. That said, my next 48 is going to be a single blade.

It's slightly uncomfortable for me but not awful. I wish the Wharncliffe sat a little lower.

The good thing is that GEC has the kicks from the factory the bare minimum for the tip of the blade to sit safely below the handle, they leave it to us to personalize the kick to our preference.

The 22 pattern is odd. It looks a lot bigger in photos than it really is. Truly it's a small knife. And the gunstock shape and weight distribution being on the butt end of such a small package was awkward to me, and so it is no longer in my collection.

I sure would like a 3 3/4" version of the #22 magnum. They could call it the #44 double magnum :p and (while I'm day dreaming) GEC could stamp them with the PPP etch and make them as the '17 forum knife... maybe some polished elk covers...

The #76 Gunstock Jack is what you want.

Thank you, didn't even know about this one. Only made in 2012... will keep an eye out for it.
