Lets talk GEC!

*sigh* I'm tempted by that Beaver #38 Special... Should I? I kind of went nusto at Blade Show... I really shouldn't...

Don't bank on it Jan. To the ignorant, Slovenia might sounds like Slovakia, or Serbia well even Siam..Er isn't that some place full of cats?? :D But a US package got sent to me in ´'Finland, United Kingdom' !! Once in Britain it got sent to Canada! They managed to figure out Finland was some place cold like their land and so I got it, eventually.....

My Bocote 38 arrived this afternoon. Great grain and whorls in it. Bit early to say about the knife all over but it's excellently finished: centre blade, no gaps, VERY sharp and nice grinds. Snap seems a bit tame mind but an oiling will sort it, pull is smooth though. I'll say more in a day or two. The wood's fabuluous though:thumbsup:

Aye, Will, as we say: to the living man, everything can happen.

Good to hear your 38 arrived, enjoy it!

If you haven't treated yourself to a 38 special yet, you probably should. I'm trying to hold myself to one (red lined micarta), remembering that there is a run of 66s right around the corner.

I feel ya tho, I've been wanting a beaver shield without the wood covers for a while now.

I would of liked to see GEC use LVS abalone instead of the LG on the 38's.

I have been looking into that option as well. A sheet of 5" x 9.5" LVS is around $275 for the thickness and quality desired. Then you take some loss while working it. At that, LVS still shows seams worse than ALVS (official name of LG). So, at about 20% of the cost and a bit more attractive from the straight on view - I am figuring out why they use ALVS. Nobody wants a seam, and they will be obvious on at least 1/3rd of the options as you simply can't afford the waste to cut around them.

I was thinking of the LVS NF barlow when I posted, it's ironic you commented. In pictures it appears to have more depth over LG. I have never seen either in person to compare so I appreciate your post. As a casual collector I know I will only have one abalone knife at some point so I'm holding out hope that we will see an LVS GEC SFO someday...

Yes, we changed a bit on the log. I am really hoping to have a ton of innovations on the new site. But the switchover is going to age me 15 years when we pull the lever....

Well best of luck with the changeover - I'm sure the new site is going to be awesome. Hopefully it goes as smoothly as possible.

I aways appreciated the extra effort taken by CK to consider the collectors and user's alike. Like giving an opinion on the effort put in to 1 knife compared to that companies complete catalog. That was something I really found to be helpful. As well as all the work the Early Reserve must take. Good luck with the change over Mike.:cool:

So how wide are the upcoming #66 Calf Ropers? Will the three blades ride on three separate springs or any of the blades share springs? Does anybody have a picture of the top or bottom view?

Here are a couple of comparo photos taken a couple years ago. From left to right: RR Eureka stockman, #66 Calf Roper primitive bone, #15 Barlow, #56 Dogleg, RR stockman.

Note how the RR stockmen both have heavily crinked sheepfoot blades, while the Calf Roper is only slightly crinked because it has a catch bit at the pivot.

LastRodeo and Black Mamba, thank you for the excellent pictures. I like how thin the knife looks even with three blades. I can see there are two brass lines together on the top side. This must have something to do with the catch bit.

No problem. In my head I always pictured it to be thicker than it is, because it is such a solid knife in hand. I did some side by side comparisons to other stockmen one day an realized it isn't as thick as I thought.

Just had a look at the GEC Prod Sched. Interesting that acrylic will be offered on the Northfield 66 but I think it's time GEC offered a new one, a version of Butter & Molasses, or that Snakeskin was very alluring, imagine that in Green!:D

There's a nice looking PEACH SEED jigged bone for one of the SFOs too, that ought to be a magnet:thumbsup:
