Lets talk GEC!

Hello, can someone please share pictures and thoughts of #78 American Jack. Not a pattern that I a familiar with but very interested.

I don't have any pictures of the one I had anymore, but I always thought of it like a #25 someone had stretched out. Like a beefier more rounded/bulbous #77.

According to the drawing it does. Long pulls look nice but make it difficult for me to open. I can barely open the 77 BF knife.

I agree very much. I added an easy open notch on my BladeForums 77. I didn't want to do that to the Northfield 77 barlows.

I would have definitely purchased one of the crown lifters but for the EO notch. Just a feature that I personally don't care for. If I could have gotten one without the EO notch I would have been in line.

What's an EO notch?

EO notch stands for "Easy Open" notch. It is referring to a notch that is put in the frame to allow for easier access to the blade(s) or at the very least, make them pinchable. Here is a GEC picture of a Beer Scout with the notch in question.

EO = Easy Open

Thanks guys! So that is what it's called. Personally I like the feature but dislike the aesthetic. But not so much that it becomes a deal breaker.

Is the only difference between the 78 American Jack and the 77 Yankee Jack the pen blade being on different sides? Or is there some other difference?

Earlier this morning, @Railsplitter mentioned that there appears to be differences in the bolsters. The 77 has squared bolsters where the 78 has rounded ones. You can see the difference in the pictures on GEC's website.

I actually really dig spear blades. Spears and straight edges like sheepfoots and lambsfoots are my absolute favorites. However, GEC executes their clip blades rather beautifully so though I generally do not prefer the clip, I would not hesitate to own one from GEC.

This is EXACTLY how I feel about blade shapes.

Ah, thank you. I didn't see that post. That makes sense now. And Norcal, thank you for the pic!

I really feel like I should order a American Jack but that Spear isn't doing anything for me. If it was a clip point it would be a different story.
