Lets talk GEC!

The 78 has thicker blade stock than the 77. Heavier pulls on the 78. I think of the 78 along the lines of the Case 6235 1/2. I am in for a sambar 2 blade.

Looks like no micarta or acrylic on the upcoming 78s? Kinda weird.

I was hoping we would get the word that 14 clips were coming...

Agreed - especially regarding micarta. Perhaps maybe the ivory acrylic gave them enough trouble to take a small break.

I'll stop predicting a run of #14s this year around December 31st. :)

Couple of 78's
One of my favorite patterns.
They got a strong snap (these older ones anyways, no idea if the new ones will too) but I like that about them.

First off, these are both very nice knives and a great photo.

I'm now torn though as I'm only reserving one #78, and thought the smooth white Tidioute would be the nicest, but this side by side makes me think I prefer the NF touches.

It COULD be the shield, but I think it's actually the lined/pinched bolster that breaks up the general "oval-ness" of the knife. Normally I'm more swayed by handle material, but this time I may want the fancy bolsters.

Thank you very much for the awesome photo norcaldude!

Have all the SFOs been announced?
I'm not really sure, I haven't heard of any. I reckon an SFO might use acrylic or micarta, should they do any.

I have an older 78 and the thing as a real alligator snap to it! Ryan, I'm with you, I might have to grab a Northfield of some kind.

I could be (and usually am) completely wrong, but it seems like when CK has an SFO, it's shown in the early reserve description. Of course I wouldn't expect to see mention of other SFOs there.

We'll probably have to wait for the next production update. For me though, I'm just getting one regardless, unless someone does an SFO with a clip.

I've been studying this for a while so I can be confident the upcoming patterns from GEC are derived from a system involving giving a random weighting to the following factors:

-considered, well reasoned responses, to requests from the customer database (us)
-some sort of deal with key dealerships,
-a random number generator, and
-whimsy.

The handle choices then go into the same equation.

That said, I would be surprised if another run of #14s makes it through.

I hear ya, I'll grab at least one. My wallet will probably still be hurting a little after all the Calf Pen Jacks I'm gonna buy!

I'm patiently waiting for the announcement of the "35 Scout surprise"! Not holding my breath, just patiently waiting, haha.

I am looking closely at the drawing of the northfield #78 and am concerned about that long pull on the main. The long pull on the recent spear point #54s wasn't great, it didn't get close enough to the tip to give enough leverage, and this one on the #78 looks the same. Additionally, when closed on the two blade model the long pull seems very close to the secondary blade.

I can forgive a lot of things on a knife but being awkward to open isn't one of them.

Also, a primary and secondary spear point isn't the best blade combination.

If it's going to happen, I'd think we would find out soon since we're already seeing photos of the other #35 parts.

I'm not the world's hugest equal end fan, but every collection should have a scout.

I find it very interesting how "individual" users are with their knives. To me, the most awkward thing about a pocket knife is if the nick is too close to the tip, requiring a big arc to open the knife. Any placement more than halfway down the blade is offputting to me. I guess it's why we have such a wonderful variety of patterns.

Here is an original 2014 #78 American Jack in primitive bone. One of my most beautiful knives, and probably the stiffest springs I've encountered on a GEC. It was a solid 8-8½ when it arrived, but after leaving the blades partially open for a couple weeks it reduced to a 7.

Take a look at the post @Norcaldude made with a 77 and 78 together. Notice the placement of the pin for the backspring, the further forward the pin is placed usually makes for a stiffer pull. I have a hard time opening some knives, nick placement is critical if the pull is heavy.

I've got a 78 in NF jigged bone reserved and all this talk about stiffer pulls than a 77 is exciting. I hope they don't lighten the pull!

My 77 BF is about a 7, but if it had a crescent nick I would have no issue opening it. These are larger knives than a 15 and I expect the pulls to be heavier, but an 8 or 9 is out of my range.
